'The Salt Bae effect' - Is Isak worth £60m? - https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/c4n9gjl0kyko

Christ, I missed this at the time

Gets added to the ever-growing pile of evidence to justify never doubing an Eddie Howe/Steve Nickson target.

My God

Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast: "What a deal. Everyone is amazed.

"We knew of the interest of Newcastle towards Isak. It makes sense in the way that Eddie Howe wants to run the team. This is a guy that is very fast, drives well with the ball, not the greatest finisher – he only scored six last season – but there is the potential there.

"I’m not sure you pay £60m for a potential player, but in any case it’s one of those. If you’ve got the money, why not?

"I don’t think he is worth that money, but he had a buyout clause. Of course Isak trebles his wages, so there wasn’t going to be any doubt from him."

Kristof Terreur added: "It’s what I call the Salt Bae effect.

"Everyone knows the famous chef who puts the salt on the steaks. He has a restaurant in Turkey where you can eat the same steak for 50 euros or for 60 euros, but in London you pay 900 euros.

"The Premier League is the same. You pay 60m euros for a player that another team might have paid 25m for in Europe."

Balague is not someone I’ve heard

from recently thankfully

I think I’m actually starting to change my tune on the fee now. 40m euros sounds like a lot, but when you break down the actual numbers, it apparently comes to around 30m pounds plus 4m in add ons. Viewed that way, it’s not a terrible price.

Someone like Tosin, who’s at a similar level imo, probably wouldn’t cost much less.

He came on for last 8 or so mins yesterday, was playing LCB, he did run out of position (towards midfield), was dispossessed, and gave up a chance for Leeds..He does look a unit though so trust Eddie to get the best out of him

Amazing how many people are quick to trust the opinion of some bloke on twitter that they had likely never heard of, over a manager and transfer team who've had something like a 95% hit rate on transfers.

If you go on twitter, you can go and find the opinion which suits what you want, very easily. Thats because every opinion has been covered.

Im a big believer in trusting the fans opinion on a player, however, its not an exact science, since context needs taken into account. Anthony Gordon was awful according to Everton fans, that will be the Everton fans who hated everything about their own club at the time.

If you want to understand Milan fans, you have to understand their history. Their fans believe they should be competing for CL trophies and dominating serie A. Theyve literally had all the best defenders in history play for their club.... its entirely understandable that they are nonplussed about a 24 year old German who's raw as fuck.

Possibly a more accurate indication of this lads potential, and remember thats what we are signing here, is the fact that not only did we want him but Bayern, Juventus and a few other clubs in Europe, where at the very least, interested in him.

I mean sure, Juventus did sign Lloyd Kelly, so there is that.

Anyway, from the little ive seen, hes physically perfect and can ping a 40 yarder, so you can see why Eddie likes him. A few weeks with the maturity of Schar, Burn and Trippier will bring the mental side of his game on.

Anyway what part of England is Thiaw from

Brexit Eddie and all that

Zzzz

No, you see in the game of twats whack-a-mole, they have now switched to another argument, now the criticism is either:

A) weve overpaid

B) weve ran out of ideas by going for long term targets

When we sign Wissa, despite him being African, the brexit Eddie stuff will be back in full swing.

🗣️ Allegri spoke to Sky Sport: Thiaw ? "It’s a shame he left. The club is working to find a replacement, that’s the transfer market you have to accept it and keep working. In the squad I have excellent players who have made themselves available to one another."

I know some will think we've paid a little over odds for Big Malick but I'm happy about this signing.

Clearly he's highly regarded by our recruitment team, physically strong, fast and decent on the ball. What he lacks in mental attributes (concentration, awareness, anticipation) can be worked on, and he's young. Generally CBs improve and even peak a little later age-wise.

I'm also pleased we were able to attract him from AC Milan. Despite not being the powerhouse they once were, they are still a big name and an attractive team. Thiaw chose us, even when their new manager Allegri wanted to keep him.

Eddie has stated himself he wants players who are motivated to be at Newcastle. For that reason and the above, I'm chuffed with this and think it'll prove good business.
