I could ask that of you like

Getting your knickers in a twist because people with far more footballing knowledge than yourself can see Elanga for what he actually is.

Why are you talking about Elanga at left back?

Besides that I've got nothing in a twist, just really disgusted by all this carrying on.

Aye we should play Elanga at left back then and then we can't say he's shite cos he's playing out of position. That's a good idea.

Miley is a good footballer. Only an idiot can't see that.

I think you’ve misunderstood the point being made, which has since been derailed by squabbling.

Burn was given by me as an example of a player who consistently got loads of shite from the stands, he was playing LB and playing poorly, despite his best efforts.

Then someone suggested that giving players loads of shite from the stands was OK because Burn became good after getting loads of shite.

But the reason Burn became good was switching positions. Not because he got shite from the stands.

The original point being made was simply this:

If you shout abuse at our own player who’s playing poorly but trying hard, in most cases it won’t make them play better, it’ll make them worse.

Not sure about your point here. Burn came in from Brighton and was immediately a good player. He's getting older now and especially at full back he struggles. He shouldn't play there now unless in an emergency.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Elanga being worse than shit week after week in his preferred position.

Gordon had already showed quality. I don't particularly like him but thwre is a player in there. He showed that today and he's shown that before. Ramsey looks steady tbf. He's a good squad player. Ramsdale is average but has sone redeeming qualities.

They aren't in the same category as Elanga. You'll figure it out in time.

Gordon was largely poor for us from signing until the end of that season

It's the following season when he was class and consistent but his first few months were not massively different to Elanga now

This was from 2 or 3 seasons ago, before Burn moved to CB. I’d be sat next to people in various parts of the ground who couldn’t wait to get stuck into Burn because he hadn’t been playing well, which at the time was in his normal position of LB.

Same as the grief Longstaff got last season, as a more recent example.

The only thing it’s got to do with Elanga, is saying that if a player isn’t playing well, but is clearly trying to play well, then shouting abuse or huffing and puffing from the stands at them won’t make them play better.

This forum loves to write off underperforming players completely. Gordon, Elanga, Ramsdale and Ramsey the default whipping boys at the moment. I have probably been guilty of it out of frustration .

The first....12 hours after a match are not the place to find opinions people will be willing to stand by after a day or two.

I’ve got to admit I’m not convinced by him. I understand the lack of confidence and that may change, I’d like to see him copy some more of Gordon’s game (when he’s doing a good job) and simply using his pace to distress the defenders and draw a foul. Cause them grief and don’t panic, let them do that. That’s confidence though I suppose.

What does worry me more is his general support play. So many times I watch him go to help his full back only to decide to stand right next to him rather than find space and therefore an option, then he manages to just get in the way as his team mate tries to pass to someone who is in space. In fairness, I think the team has an issue generally with supporting team mates who need an outlet. Throw-ins have far too often gone straight to the opposition and all too often it seems we’re too static …. but now I’m just starting to ramble on.

He’s ours now so hopefully with a bit more coaching, experience with the team and a goal off his arse or something things will click for him. I just want to be wrong about him.

Whether he turns it around and Kaka gets on his usual wonky high horse or not, right now he's been horrific and shown very limited flashes of anything close to acceptable for the wages, fee, expectations and level he should be playing at.

Piss poor.

As much as I think he’s been terrible and worse than my already low expectations, he’s clearly playing with zero confidence and I was shocked how vitriolic the home fans were whenever he messed up. Needs some love.

He wasn't poor at all when he first signed. You're making stuff up there.

A perfect summary of the situation.

he was really bad in the 5 months after signing. Was only after the under 21 Euros he started performing.

Again I'm struggling to see your point mate. Longstaff already had some credit in the bank. He was steady away. Burn came in and did well. I've seen absolutely nothing of Elanga. Nowt at all to suggest he's got anything at all about him.

And he cost £55m. It's wasted money at this stage.

This was the problem with us this summer. We signed physical profiles instead of technical ability. We desperately needed an intelligent winger and centre mid and we signed pace.

Did you actually say this in the summer, or are you just a hindsight merchant?

Fair play of you did.

He really wasn't like. You're getting yourself confused here. Gordon cane in and did well from the off. It's been later on where he's struggled.

Are you discussing a different time here?

We signed Gordon in January 2023, you are saying he did well from then onwards?

I'm really not, go back to the Anthony Gordon thread to that time and see what people were saying about him

I don't need to. I remember. I wasn't keen on signing him. 6 months in I was getting ribbed off people in the pub pre match cos I'd said I didn't want to sign him! I remember clear as day.
