Newcastle United 5-0 Crystal Palace (16/04/25)

I thought this game was going to be our banana skin game after the good win over Man U. The kind of game where you dominate the game and then lose to a last minute goal. Like we did in the away game.

But that was a fully dominant team game. Excelling across the field, beautiful goals.
Frikking loved these last three games.

It basically takes all the luck out of it. If you pick a corner keeper has 50/50 chance of diving the right way and a decent chance to save it if he does. The margin for error on top bins and right on the corner is pretty low even if the keeper can't ever save it. With the stop start/jump pen keeper basically has no chance if it's done perfectly. Either the keeper doesn't move and is too late to react when the taker passes it in or the keeper crumbles under the pressure and makes the first move and the taker can just pass it in to the other corner.

I think the sample applies the other way though. I don't think it's entirely luck for a striker to step up and hit it hard with accuracy from 12 yards. Adding complications to the run up is adding opportunity to fail, and we seem to see these kind of fails fairly regularly, and they're embarrassing.

Palace got a massive bump from the penalty. 0.75 alone for that. Dunno where the rest of their 2.22 came from. Didn't feel like they had any threating chances?

Theres would be Mateta shot from 6 yards centre goal that Tino blocked and the header from 2 yards out that their own player blocked.

As usual xg required alongside other stats/over time, not standalone.

to be honest, they had one 3v3 where they made a totally wrong decision when easy pass to Mateta would have seen him through. Again that shows as 0,00xG. I don't really like that stat.

Probably a reach, but it seems like we're playing with more energy now. I wonder if we were being a bit more conservstive earlier in the season.

Routinely winning matches with ages left on the clock will be helping with this but aye. Energy levels looked daft last night.

I think Bruno's cup final team talk has ignited the players.

The players confidence has grown and grown and those with any self doubt have become twice the players they were.

Barnes, Murphy, Burn and even Tino on the left have become potential England players...

It reminds me of the Keegan Era when the momentum carried us from one high to the next.

Even a blip against Villa will not stop this... Is this the way to Barcelona!

Yeah, that's a really good shout. Must register super high XG for that when the reality was it was never going to threaten the goal with Tino so close and on it.

Our fitness levels have jumped up massively, much more pressing across the whole game.

Was mentioned earlier in season when we was playing within ourselves if it was a case of a new fitness regime that was tailored towards players peaking in April, instead of flagging.

Appears to be the case, which is a good basis for next season and Europe.

Thought that was up there with one of our best performances of the season. Game in hand against a decent side & a bit of pressure on us. I fully expected an edgy game and close win... But that was brutal. Pressed really aggressively, sharp passing and ultra clinical. It did seem we had set up to get the ball forward more quickly to stop their fullbacks getting back in position.

We were awesome last night. I honestly couldn't believe how good we were.

Yep, great win, great performance, a few top drawer goals from us, and a bit of justice done with Neek Pope saving the penna.

On that, I beleive the reason it was given was 'a reckless challenge' or something?

How many times have we seen keepers come flying out, punching or claiming a ball whilst also cleaning out a forward, and nothing is ever given??!! But, as I say, at least justice was done and he saved it.

Lets hope we can get soemthign at Villa on saturday and firmly cement our CL place.

Being greedy, I now want us to chase down Arsenal, and go for 2nd place. We have them to play, they have big games, and hopefully one eye on the CL Semi-Final at least.

Didn’t somebody say that teams with a high press tend to finish the season strong. Don’t know the science behind this but it was posted with conviction. Hope so as it seems to be the case [emoji38]

I'm sure I said this at some point so I'll take the credit
