Osula was clearly a better option to Wilson every single time Wilson was subbed on last season simply by being able to run. That he can dribble past players, got a good height to be dangerous on set pieces and has a cracking shot in him are just added bonuses.

 

Besides, he's never shown us he can't be relied on in his rare appearances. Don't understand where this comes from. Is it because of his personality?

If you saw them both in training it might give a better sense of why. Though, regardless of training, no doubt Wilson had a lot ‘in the bank’ with Howe to instil confidence that he was the more likely to make things happen.

Osula's appearances have been sporadic so far, but Howe is backing the Denmark international to contribute in Wilson's absence, citing his physicality as a key asset.

"I think it is a huge jump for him, in every way," said Howe. "I have been really, really impressed by him. His attitude to learning is top and he works with a variety of coaches after training to improve.

"You don't suddenly land and adjust and become a Premier League striker [but] he is readier than he has ever been and now with Callum out, he has to step up. He is big, quick and strong and there is just that refinement.

Every player in the team has room to improve if you ask Howe. He's consistently said that about the likes of Hall, Livramento, Gordon - heck, even Isak

 

You said Osula probably hadn't shown what they wanted to see in training, and Howe has obviously been happy with what Osula has done there consistently over the whole season so I don't see that as a relevant argument for why he hasn't been given more opportunities.

OK then......Howes also going to be complimentary about all the players, so forget all his quotes about Osula. Now......why wouldn't he play him if he is doing what Howe wants ?

 

I've said what I see in Osulas game, basically talent there but still very raw and definitely doesn't carry out the press instructions.

Look I love Howe but I also feel he should have been given more minutes, got to remember he also sent Minteh out on loan and I believe he would have done it again if he’d stayed but Brighton proved he was ready. IMO Howes only weakness is his inability to rotate better.

Just my opinion though.

He sent Minteh out on loan because he was kid coming in from the Danish league and we had 4 players who would get in ahead of him. Also it took a few months at Feyenoord for him to look the part in the Dutch league.

 

We've been through the rotation bit before, he rotated Isak and Wilson until injury stopped it, he rotated Gordon and Barnes (Barnes got injured V Sheff utd playing for a rested Gordon), he brought Murphy in for Almiron in Milan. 

 

I think it came down to he could've played Tino instead of Trippier at Wolves. Outside of that, like last season with injuries there weren't many options except in goal.

Just my opinion though.

 

I think it's too early to call it a weakness, he's only had one season with European football during his career and that was sidetracked early on with numerous injuries. We did fine this season with injuries without rotating that much and the squad was still extremely thin. Next season will tell a lot and hopefully show that he has learned from 23/24 even if some of those injuries were just freak accidents and bad luck.

It's just not Eddie's way to put players in if he doesn't feel they are ready. Hall sat on the bench for a year when we had 12 fit senior players, now he's a regular starter and England International. Osula seems to have gone from a certainty to be loaned out to "likely to be kept around" which is either an indication of his progress or our lack of in the transfer market.

Agree with that and Ive posted many a time about when the both play it HAS to be Gordon (plenty of history playing on the right) on the left and Barnes (little history playing on the right) on the left. It may work in training but hasn't translated in competitive games.

but I recalled towards end of season when Gordon was suspended, Barnes played quite well and kept his place even when Gordon became available again?

I'm extra-optimistic this season because I think if we get a new CB, new striker and perhaps another central midfield player in, Eddie will be able to rotate without significantly weakening the team. He's not had that luxury before.

I'm also excited that the new recruits, if we get them, will allow us to play in new ways and switch things up when a tactical change is needed to win the game. Feels like something we've not been able to do consistently under Howe yet.
