If this were anywhere close to being true, we'd not be talking to Chelsea at all, and this is just us getting worked up over a very spurious rumour. Holmesy
2 minutes ago, Kanj said: have a forum of ppl obsessed with us finding new names yet also bemoan that transfers take time, years and years of scouting and relationship building and we can't be knee jerk, so when we do move on someone we've heard or been linked with in the past, it becomes "well this list is old" and repeats the cycle of wanting new names. I think there's merit in both to a degree - If Eddie feels like he can bring a player seamlessly into our system and they fit the bill in all areas, it makes sense to track them and try to sign them. But we need to increase our risk profile at the same time because otherwise our squad remains paper-thin. Cast a wider net for talent, focus on signing ready-made players for the first team combined with others we can develop and bring through, and we have the best of both worlds. If we're only ever determined to spunk £60m on proven players, we'll always lag behind the big boys

Erikse
59 minutes ago, Kooiman said: It's a good question and goes back to a post I made a while back; which phase are we in? To your point, we're not able to offer a better situation than say Liverpool/Chelsea/Man City, unless we're actively pitching as a stepping stone which I hate. Then you're talking about the players that Aston Villa and teams aspiring for the spots in 6-10th want. MY question is, are they good enough to consistently get you into the top four? It's so hard to compare to the last team to do this (Man City) because there's less space on the dancefloor than when they did it. They also cycled through players at a rapid rate in the early years. For every David Silva and Vincent Kompany there was a Jerome Boateng and a Steven Jovetic. Their miss rate decreased as they got smarter, but that's because they learned about shopping at that end of the market. The perfect run required now feels almost unattainable, especially when much of it is funded by selling some of your success stories to rivals. Liverpool fans love citing Coutinho, but they were also Liverpool with masive revenue streams and less scrutiny. That's why I feel we're being boxed in to signing lads like Nicolas Jackson, who to be frank, we know will never be a 20 goal a season striker. We're being asked to make do with misfit toys while selling our best player to a team that didn't take a risk on him in the first place. We went from relegation candidates to 2 CL qualifications and a trophy signing players that largely weren't chased by the big six. Okay, maybe Arsenal wanted Bruno back then, but that was before players realised our financial ceiling. I'm not aware of other big six clubs chasing Botman, Isak, Hall, Livra, Tonali etc when we signed them. Yet these are now players capable of being regulars for a regular top 4 side. Ofcourse Howe has done his bits with development, but Howe is still there to develop new players. We have already proven how creativity in the market and some risk taking can get us really far with Howe. What would take us to the next step is to do more of the Botman, Isak, Tonali type signings that we have already been doing.
