Fak
57 minutes ago, Smal said: the eye test doesn’t suggest otherwise though though. If you watch the Villa game where they had some settled possession, Woltemade was part of the flat midfield 5 when we switch to a mid/low block. Exactly the same as when Joelinton or anyone else plays there. When we have settled possession Woltemade is playing between the lines from the left of a midfield 3, just as when anyone else plays there. It’s exactly the same system. Banging my head against a wall when people keep saying the system has changed/we’ve gone 4-2-3-1 . Just look at where Ramsey vs Villa or Willock vs Qarabag played, they get into the same high positions as Woltemade does, just from the other side. They aren’t playing as part of a midfield 2 at all. We played a 4-2-3-1 against Bournemouth I think in January and that looked very different. The question long term is whether he’s athletic enough to play the role. For some reason he looks like he has a hell of a lot more stamina as a central midfielder than he does as a striker though, I guess it’s just from not having to sprint to lead the press as often. Clearly 4-2-3-

Lush Vlad
Quote Gives us another option in there. Seeing as he is so comfortable on the ball. Much better at keeping hold of it and seeing off challenges when he is in there than when he is back to goal with the CB’s. Totally different players. But it was like when Joelinton dropped in. Suddenly looked good in the air, his hold up play was miles better and he could retain possession. Not many genuine 9s in world football with a well rounded game. That can consistently do a job up top on their own in a league like this. Especially with how the playing style has been turned on its head this season. Said this after Villa in the match thread and it looked even more apparent last night. Off the ball when defending, he definitely slots in as the left centre mid. I think we drop into a 4-5-1 and he plays left of the 5. Or if we are pressing at the time, it is usually from more of a 4-4-2 and I noticed Willcok further forward a few times. TBH, I think he spent plenty of time as that left 8 and it was the same against Villa. The same comments about our attacking players and midfield in general since PSG. They all look a lot more fluid and not seemingly playing in imaginary lanes like we often saw in the more traditional Howe 4-3-3. No idea if it has been a clear instruction from Howe. But they seem to be playing with more freedom, even against better sides like PSG and Liverpool (first half).

Alberto2005
I don't think it's the fact Gordon took the second penalty that is the issue, as we know he was designated to take it. It's that deep down he comes across as a selfish character at times (IMO), and if the boot was on the other foot and Woltemade was the penalty taker I'd be very sure he'd have been asking Woltemade to give him the second penalty and kicking up a fuss. Gordon is the pen taker, I can’t even see how this is a debate.
Jack14Bojangles
For me, it would have been a sign of greatness to let Wolte take the penalty.
black_n_white
Woltemade had 90 mins of opportunity to score a goal, Gordon 100% had to take that penalty.

And he's desperate for goals - we were 4-0 up. The fact Trips stepped in does that not set alarm bells ringing that things aren't right with Wolte? Woltemade isn’t the pen taker (and missed his last one). Gordon is. It really is as simple as that. what difference does it make that shearer was a striker? Gordon was the striker in that game. And? No it doesn’t set alarm bells at all. Does it for you, like? Woltemade scored a few days ago, I’m sure he’s fine. So he's working at a 60% conversion rate, which is poor.

Nine from nine this season (including the Bournemouth shootout) and not many of them remotely close to being saved.
