The competition has been undermined enough without taking away the purest and simplest thing of all: the luck of the draw.

 

Helping out the smaller teams by manufacturing a money-spinning tie is a noble endeavour but it's a bit disingenuous and overly beneficial to the top clubs too, who are being guaranteed a theoretically safer passage. 

 

There are better ways to trickle down the cash without undermining the FA Cup (again).

Were discussing the possibility of guaranteeing lower clubs home advantage if drawn against top clubs.

 

Nobody wants seeding l, Ive even mentioned bringing the top 5 leagues in at round 1 proper.

Was gutted when we lost to Brighton last season, but no guarantees we win the Carabao or qualify for the CL with those extra few games and competition distracting us. Think we're in a better place to prioritise a bit this year.

It would be the lower clubs who’d be most against it

 

edit: by way of example, if Weston Super Mare pulled Man Utd out of the hat, they’d get half the money from the 3,500 tickets sold at their ground.  If the tie was played at OT, they’d get half of whatever the revenue was that day - even with a reduced crowd, it could still be 40-50k tickets sold.  If the tickets at OT were reduced to an average of £25, that would still be £500k for Weston Super Mare.  If they ramped up their home ticket prices to double that and charged £50, they’d still only get £87.5k.  No lower league club would want to take the home tie.

Stevenage did V us when offered the TV money. 

 

Its a discussion worth having either way.

I'm not even going to think about this until the day of the game. It's a winnable game obviously, but will be a slog, and who knows what sort of side we'll put out with PL and CL taking priority. If we get through great, if not, well there's always next year.

Derby vs Leeds is a bigger game - I’m more dubious about Liverpool vs Barnsley.  Who would want to sit down and watch that?

As of 2023, 87 out of Man Utds last 88 FA Cup ties had been screened live, including a run of every FA Cup tie for 12yrs.

I desperately want an FA Cup run - it feels like forever since the last one.  And it really feels like we’ve assembled a perfect ‘cup team’ - we’re a good (not great side) who can beat pretty much anyone when we’re on song; we’ve won one before now; the manager also has the feel of being a really good cup manager in terms of doing it on big occasions.  I hope we field the strongest side possible and have a proper go - I’d happily see us rest players for the league games either side of this.  If I see us win the FA Cup I’d die a ridiculously happy man - it’s the competition our history hangs on.

Likewise. The Brighton game felt like such a missed opportunity drive on in the competition.

It's not bigger than Leeds v Derby at all, that match has always had a bit of bite to it, they absolutely hate each other.
