HaydnNUFC
PSV EINDHOVEN @ ST. JAMES' PARK Aaaaaannnnnd it's back to the Champions League at SJP for the first time since we beat Bilbao back in early November and the final time at home in the league stage. Wednesday sees PSV come up here for the third time in European competitions, after times in the Champions League in 1997-98 and the UEFA Cup quarter-final in 2004. We've won one and lost one as it stands, fingers crossed we are set to improve that record. LAST TIME OUT? 2003-04's run in the UEFA Cup pitted us against PSV in the quarter final stage. After a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands and taking a vital away goal back with us, we appeared favourites to get to the semi finals. However, Meteja Kezman who scored in Eindhoven also equalised for PSV in the home leg, making it a nervous one in the end; The teams that night; NUFC: Given, Hughes, Woodgate, Bramble, Bernard, Ambrose, Jenas, Robert, Speed, Bellamy, Shearer PSV: Waterreus, Bouma, Colin, Young-pyo, De Jong, Park Ji-sung, van Bommel, Vogel, Bøgelund, Kežman, Rommedahl WHAT ABOUT THEM NOW? They are runaway leaders in the Eredivisie; 16 points clear of 2nd placed Feyenoord. They have only lost 1 match domestically and 2 in the Champions League; all at home. They are unbeaten away from home in all competitions, a run that includes draws at Leverkusen & Olympiacos and a very impressive and hilarious 1-4 win at Anfield. They have however lost to Union Saint-Gilloise at home, lost their most recent match in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and are yet to keep a clean sheet in the competition. They sit 21st on 8 points in the Champions League table and won 2-1 away against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday. Attacking midfielder Guus Til is their top scorer and former Spurs player Ivan Perisic has been a staple for them. Other names that you may recognise amongst their squad are Alassane Plea who we were once linked with under Benitez, former Barcelona defender and Yank Sergino Dest as well as Ruben van Bommel, son of Mark. They are managed by former Dortmund, Lyon and Ajax manager Peter Bosz. HOW WELL DO WE DO AGAINST DUTCH CLUBS AT SJP? 2006-07; won 4-2 v AZ Alkmaar (UEFA Cup) 2004-05; won 2-1 v Heerenveen (UEFA Cup) 2003-04; won 2-1 v PSV (UEFA Cup) 2003-04; won 5-0 v NAC Breda (UEFA Cup) 2002-03; lost 0-1 v Feyenoord (Champions League) 1997-98; lost 0-2 v PSV (Champions League) 1968-69 won 4-0 v Feyenoord (Fairs Cup) ANY TIES BETWEEN THE CLUBS? Sir Bobby Robson; managed Newcastle United from 1999-2004. managed PSV in two spells, 1990-92 & 1998-99. Patrick Kluivert; played for Newcastle United 2004-05. 31 games, 11 goals. played for PSV in 2006. 19 games, 3 goals. Patrick Van Aanholt; played for Newcastle United (on loan from Chelsea) 2009-10. 7 games, 0 goals. played for PSV 2022-23. 43 games, 2 goals. Luuk De Jong; played for Newcastle United (on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach) 2014. 12 games, 0 goals. played for PSV 2014-2024. 296 games, 166 goals. Siem De Jong; played for Newcastle United 2014-15. 26 games, 2 goals, 1 collapsed lung. played for PSV on loan from us in 2016. 24 games, 7 goals. Georginio Wijnaldum; played for Newcastle United 2015-16. 40 games, 11 goals. played for PSV 2011-15. 132 games, 49 goals. Jetro Willems; played for Newcastle United (on loan from Frankfurt) 2019-20. 19 games, 2 goals. played for PSV 2011-16. 175 games, 12 goals. This game won't be the gimme it maybe looked when the draw was made going by their away showings in the Champions League this season. Whilst Arsenal did rip them apart 9-3 over two legs last season, they look much stronger now than they did then. This game is a must win for our CL prospects given our quite daunting final fixture. Everyone needs to be up for this. Howay the lads!

Alberto2005
Assuming we're going to lose against PSG, isn't it likely we make the playoffs regardless of the result of this game?
Danh1
Remember the atmosphere being class that night we beat them in the UEFA Cup. Hopefully the same Wednesday (doubt it)

I'm not sure about the mathematical permutations with some clubs playing each other so both can't get max points et cetera, but 3 teams outside the playoff zone are on 6 points. We are on 10. If we lost this, it could be a bit of a nightmare tbh. A win will guarantee a play off spot I think. Finishing in a spot where we are seeded in the draw (ie away first leg against a theoretically lesser side) will still be in play even with a win though. Top 8 would also be still possible but very tough to get given our final fixture should we win this. A draw and...I don't fucking know. Bring back the group stages. Enough of this woke nonsense. Wallsendmag
PSV haven't lost an away game in any competition for 10 months. 3 away games in this seasons CL have seen draws at Olympiakos and Bayer Leverkusen and a 4-1 thumping of Liverpool at Anfield. Both the strikers are out injured for this so expect Midfielder Gus Til to play CF.

Obviously my predictions could be completely wrong but seems unlikely we'll drop out altogether now, but guess we need to be seeded so maybe a win is a must. I predicted all the other games (despite knowing next to nowt about most of the sides involved aside from the top clubs) as well as ours; had us winning on Wednesday and losing to PSG and we're seeded. If you then click onto Bracket View you can see who we'd be getting in the playoff. Ties against Monaco or Qarabag from mine. An ideal tie but not the most ideal away trip if we got the latter. Ah yeah, I got Marseille in the playoff to then play Bayern or Arsenal in the KOs.
