Just seems like some dickheads did it (Chelsea, Birmingham) then everyone else has to follow just to show they can. Just a jazz band would be better or better yet nothing. Brits tend to be more cynical about this type of stuff, but they love their light shows in the middle east, and probably in plenty of other places.
