Milner and Butt are the only two to have turned up this season IMO. Out of those two, I opted for Milner.

Ironic how both could have been away in the Summer if Birmingham had of stayed up and the Villa deal gone through for Jimmy.

Milner shades Butt for me, with Martins next because of his goals. At times Nicky Butt has been absolutely tremendous for us, yesterday was just another example of a top-notch defensive midfielder display (although his passing still rankles and his lack of pace isn't brilliant). Although I don't think he's been as consistently brilliant as some claim.

Milner has played more games than anyone and is still looking as lively as ever, no matter where he's asked to play for the team. He constantly attacks and drives at opponents and with two quality strikers to aim for instead of one (and with a goalscoring attacking midfielder in the side) I can only wonder how many assists his numerous crosses into the box might have given him. The great thing is, he should only get better with age and with a better team around him - having Owen in the side should be a massive boon to his game. Great stuff after what he went through early in the season.

Milner has probably put more crosses into the box than anyone in the league, this will give those who don't like him pleny of ammunition to say it points to a lack of quality but on numerous occasions this season we have been luck to have one player in the box and even when we do its normally Martins.

Yesterday was a good example, he swung in a few quality crosses but there was too often no-one getting into the spaces to attack them.

Same goes for Carroll's cut back to an extenet (although after seeing it a few times he should have been a little bit more selfish but fair do's he is still young and will learn), that was allowed to travel all the way through the box without a Newcastle player in sniffing distance. With a poacher of say Owen's quality there is a good chance that would have ended up as a goal or a near miss.

Too true. If we had a half decent partner for Martins we'd have converted lots of Milners crosses and he's have one of the best assist rates in the league.

Hope he doesn't leave in the summer.

Its really sad to to be reading down the list of players and have to think ahrd about who it could be, and thats not because there is lots of compitition for the award, its a case of non of them really stand out as having a fantastic season.

James Milner is a class act - the team should be based around him - give him the ball - let him have a long-range shot or two. Let him take free-kicks and corners from both sides. This player is a talent just waiting to be released. We haven't seen the best of him yet. Roeder - tell him to frequently take on players and make runs all of the time!!!
