TRon
Vic will no doubt find something wrong. without question but that's because he's senile. you don't need to be senile to realise top teams and top managers don't piss around wasting time on free trialists in a transfer window when they have money in their pocket Silly me...I forgot we are currently treble winners and playing Champions League football. Let's sign Ronaldinho and Tevez then. Plus we need John Terry so tell him to get his bags packed.
Razor
Worthwhile getting him on trial. Even though he aint a "back" he would be a solid addition to our defensive prospects. Bit concerned Sam is transfering like he is still at Bolton but then again all signings have been very solid and the squad is increasing week by week. ohmelads
On a trial and a possible free transfer. The most we can possibly lose in this deal is...nowt. what is there to be possibly worried about? As I said on the last page, I don't think it's that simple. If we sign Duscher it means we're not getting someone else. And if it turns out Duscher isn't good enough, we send him back to Deportivo, probably for two or more years on decent wages (plus signing on fee), and if an opportunity comes up to sign a better player we could have a problem peddling him. In short, we don't want to end up with dead wood. I don't know how Duscher will turn out, but these are my reservations. We have experience in Butt, and experienced cover available in Geremi. This is one position where I think a youthful understudy may be a better answer. Just my thoughts, I'm not against this signing but I feel we're possibly missing out on a lot of better options. FYP. Do people not understand the concept of trials? He's not at Deportivo, he's a free agent. When I said "if he isn't good enough" I was refering to his Premiership performances, not a one week trial, I thought that was pretty obvious. And if it turns out Duscher isn't good enough we're stuck with him, probably for two or more years on decent wages (plus signing on fee), and if an opportunity comes up to sign a better player we could have a problem peddling him. In short, we don't want to end up with dead wood. You could say that about any potential signing, you cant hesitate over the signging of a player because it might stop you buying a future player. You'd end up not signing anyone. Its really simple what we are doing/need to do. We need to build a sensible squad, climb up the league and then sign one, two or three players who can take the team further each season/year. Until we reach our potential, whatever that is/will be. This will take time tho. Some people dont sound up for a sensible few seasons, even after the last few years of circus acts we have rolled out at SJP. Tsunami
If Duscher comes in & does a fantastic job & plays regularly I'll hold my hands up & say "well done there Sam - very shrewd". If he signs & does ok I'll be left wondering why we signed him when we could & should have been looking at better. We have enough squad midfield players. I've had no problem with the free signings made before the takeover & on players we already know. It is different now; we have money (please don't say yes; but we don't know how much.....). As Vic said top clubs wouldn't consider this & for that matter nor would top players. Sam's thought process on Duscher may sound good to some but the fact that he is looking there in the first place must be open to question.
Parky
Haven't seen him play for a while, but good player and no mistake. If there are other issues ie money or injuries, I'm sure Sam will make a correct evaluation. If we do take him on it probably will be a one year deal rolling...To give us and him leeway. On the whole I'm positive on this one.

Yeah, free transfers are always shit and no top club would ever pick up a player on the expiration of his contract.

Defensive midfield is a position that we need an extra body for. It's common knowledge that Sam wants to focus whatever budget he has on the defense, so he's trying out a highly-rated, experienced, free on a trial. I agree with what you're saying, and a few rotation signings to see us through our progression might be sensible. After all, Duscher may be for us what Zenden was for Liverpool, someone who comes in and 'does a job' when injuries hit, and when on form can push people for their places. Perhaps I'm being too idealistic about this, but I'd like us to have a balanced squad of experience and youth, with players motivated to break into the first team who have their best years ahead of them. Duscher would be a very sensible option if we're skint, but if we're not then we don't have to sign him just because he's free, there are a lot of options out there. Yorkie
PS - i wouldn't say we're skint as such; just - like i said - he'll just want to focus his budget on the defense, rather the midfield, which is why we're looking at frees as apposed to big-money players. Especially in regards to defensive midfield, when all we need is another body. Butt will do a good job next season.
Guest Gemmill
I love Vic slagging Toontastic all the time. Blatantly gutted because his shitty wind-up attempts fell flat on their face over there, and everyone was free to make it very clear what they thought of him without fear of a ban. This is a bloke who turned up in the pub pretending to be someone else because he'd acted like such a wanker on here.

SA is showing previous managers up, so far. Like someone mentioned earlier we wont be spending any money until Darth Mort has gone through the books. We also moaned we had no really leaders & battlers on the pitch last season, especially in away games. If he is free, looks good in a trail. Then get him. Two year contract and an option on a third if he puts the work in.
