Skirge
You'd rather we didn't sign him, so wish death on him? Have a f****** word. He could bounce of said train and maybe lose a limb, as long as his injury stops us signing him, maybe a train is a bit sever I admit, so how about getting hit by an over enthusiastic cyclist going flat out on a racer. Elliottman
Argg i hate Alan Smith Why are we chasing this guy? We are now a midfielder down.. so what do we do? We go for a striker which is the only area that does not need improving Sure Big Sam is looking for other players, but why the hell is Smith a likely target.. WE DONT NEED HIM He's not an out and out striker. He will more likely play in midfield most of the time. He will give a lot more than Dyer did, and if you put him and Dyer 1 on 1 with the keeper, id choose Smith to score any day of the week. hasnt got the pace of Dyer, but lets face it, apart from the first 2 games back from injury last season, Dyer was bollocks. Not a huge fan of Smith, but glad to see the back of Dyer. Smith has premiership and Champions league experience, still young, and will be very hungry to prove his worth. Could do worse... Guest Ebolarama
Would take Smith over Dyer any day, but frankly not crazy about either. So really, what I'm trying to say is... well... "meh"

Guest Verlaine
I'm willing to speculate that none of you have closely followed the career of Alan Smith. Given that, all of your opinions are based on the odd game you've seen on sky and then MotD highlights. Just saying.
Memphis
Don't quite understand all the animosity toward Smith either.
nufcjmc
I agree with whoever said I really wanted him before manu signed him as i thought he was a great prospect and really he got over shadowed quite quickly much like saha it took ages for them to get a foothold in the side, when i have seen him play I have found him to be decent, really think that we could do better with 6m if the fee is to be believed but as many have said too young and english usually adds the £££' s on. Certainly we all went on how sam is good at getting the best out of players that have took a dip in their carear and with smith still seemly reeling off a long list of injuries we should keep the faith its not like souey or rodent signed the lad. Kimbo
Oh jesus wept. We're throwing £6m at a player that specialises in running around snarling, and isn't good enough for our first team. T'rrific.

T'rrific. he still managed to get a game for manu, I really dont see the big fuss. He is comming from manu after being told he will not get as many games as he wants due to newer more expensive signings, we are not buying him from wigan or some unknown club so I say if we can give dyer more than one chance we can do the very same for smith. KaKa
Some of the comments on here are disgusting. I for one prefer to wait and see how he will be used and how he performs before making any kind of comment. I saw him play in midfield quite a bit for Man U and was always surprised by how well he used the ball when in posession. The only downside was the way he flew into some rash tackles, but I think this was more down to him playing DM and being told to replace Keane. As an attacking midfielder he won't have that demand on him. I bet if he comes he does really well, especially because he is a good pro and is going to work very hard to make sure he does well and if he is playing every week I'm sure he will. This is going to be interesting and there is a huge potential for some people on here to look like absolute morons. Really dissapointing response to a player who has chosen to come here and play for your club. Disgraceful. At least wait till he messes up before having a go. Dragon55544
I think he will be good player for us, He will add a bit of fight when we are away from home and he will score his fair share of goals. He can play in a number of positions which tbf we need atm because of the small squad.
nufcjmc
he came to them as a striker, fergie descided to make him keane's replacement even though he had shown no signs of being that sort of player and then was resorted to being a bench player never getting a long run of games. Not impressive but definetly good enough reason to say he deserves a chance.
Skirge
He will play less games for us than Dyer did, total waste of money!!

Guest Geordie_krispy
Personally I don't like the bloke. Not really sure why, but if it's because of the whole racist beating thing, that maybe why i don't like Bowyer either much, same kinda thing for Woody, but to a lesser extent (but strange as he was the only one who was charged). Footballing terms, if you look at it in terms of a replacement for Dyer. I'd take Smith 90% of the time, yes he doesn't have the pace, but he can put that killer pass in more often, and as long as he's not playing a DM role (what Butt and Geremi are for i reckon) then he's got to compete with Emre and Barton for that AM role, if you were to play him just behind Viduka/Owen/Martins (pick you favourite two) then there's hopefully some light at the end of the dark tunnel in terms of actually being able to get the ball to our strikers. Overall, I'm not unhappy about it, not overjoyed either though.
Tisd09
Not elated about this but not suicidal over his signing. The way prices are going these day £6 million for an England International is about par for the course. And before I write him off completely I would like to see how he will do for us. Lets face it, if he is a hit on the field we will hero worship this fella, His type of attitude is what the fans loves, so if he is crunching opponents week in week out snarling as he gets up and is playing well we will all be cheering him to the rafters and this thread will be forgotten about. Then again he could be shite and will get eggs thrown at him!
