Old thread about a potential Icelandic takeover bid years ago

I hope this isn't true. Mike Ashley'#s commitment could probably be bought out but I wouldn't want to see Alan Shearer involved in ownership of the club. One of the best things about having a neutral owner is that we have smashed the old 'jobs for the boys' culture. With Shearer's return, that will all come back with Alan Oliver re-hired as chief cheerleader.

They were talking about the story and said that very few if any had picked the story up in the UK. They went on to mention NO and said that people on here had very different opinions on the takeover, ranging for "go away" to "if they got the money then fine".

It wasn't much more.. but still a mention.

Certainly hope the subtext wasn't painted as "go away, we hate Icelanders".  It's more "go away, we don't want anyone buying the club again in the same summer"

they are quite rich...

Richer than Ashley?

Don't have to be. Just rich enough to offer a price that would induce him to sell.

I didn't know there was that much money in Fish

Alan Shearer is being strongly linked with a possible Icelandic led takeover of Newcastle United.

English businessman Mike Ashley only completed his takeover at St James' Park in June - but already the club is being linked with a new boardroom battle.

An Asian-based bid was rumoured to be interested earlier this month - but now an Icelandic consortium is reportedly readying a bid for the Magpies.

Jon Asgeir Johannesson, chief of Baugur - who in recent years have bought iconic British companies such as House of Fraser, Hamleys and Goldsmiths, is reported to be behind the bid.

Johannesson along with Palmi Haraldsson, who runs another Icelandic investment group Thera, are reported to have approached Shearer with a view to becoming involved with the bid.

Icelandic sources are claiming that a potential deal is very much in the offing, but it remains to be seen whether Ashley would be tempted into selling just months after purchasing the club.

Got there in the end!
