Hardly a massive stretch to decide he was best suited to a season on loan. Hhmm, if you can't play in the championship then you are royally f***ed for the premier league. How can a player not be suited for the championship but be fine for the premier league. It's just a much shitter league, that's the only difference. Bit of a flippant point that, there'd be lots of examples to be honest if I were to spend some time thinking about it. The Championship is more physical, more is let go by the refs, less is spotted by the refs. It generally makes it harder for more intricate players to prosper. Not making any particular reference to Saivet here mind, just the general point you're making.

He's a decent enough option as an attacking option, just not good enough to hold down a regular spot imo. I don't mind him being here, but we should be looking to upgrade this season because he just doesn't do enough defensively for top level football. Think I'm in the small minority that thinks he's one of the best midfielders we've had in 20 years

That was just because of his recent injuries though no? I've always been in the camp that a match-fit Siem de Jong could be very useful for us, hoping he'll do good for us as that fulcrum behind a lone striker that links everything up, every time I saw him play he showed good technique, control and quick feet. His injury record has been absolutely horrendous. I don't think a season in the Championship, recently back from all his injuries, would have helped him at all. Playing at a more sedate pace abroad might have helped his recovery and building of match fitness. If it was that Rafa rated him, I think he took a calculated risk that he could be useful if/when we were promoted and wanted to have the opportunity to see him fit for this pre-season. Lots of wishful thinking, but he looked good enough before we signed him and match fitness aside (missing easy chances), has imo looked classy.

I always thought this too when he first signed, seemed to think it was a good idea to play him off/ahead of Mitro to give Mitro the space he does well with (e.g. Serbia/Anderlecht). But I guess it wouldn't take long for teams to realise that allowing Riviere to roam free unmarked wouldn't be the worst plan in the world
