Certainly appeared to be a better captain on the pitch than Parker and Geremi and all the others that have stood in post-Shearer. They too were not that good captains. If i remember correctly Geremi was given the captaincy just because he knew a certain number of different languages making him communicate effectively with other players. We desperately need to look for players that are good captain material. The only ones i would recommend from our current squad is either Harper/Given or Habib Beye for now - but we definitely need a captain similar to Gareth Barry. But ofcourse it is also wrong to give someone the captaincy the year he is brought into a new team. A person needs to be at a team for a few years to get to know the team and its style of play. so without being captain, owen has no 'place' in the squad, and given is good captain material, considering he's an un-commanding goal keeper who never communicates with his defense and never takes the initiative to come and claim crosses. are you sure?

dont necessarily think it means his contract's sorted, it might even be an attempt at giving him a little more incentive to sign one. i'm not worried about his injury this time, when he pulled his thigh in training a few weeks after coming back from the serious knee injury i was very worried, but he got in a very solid run of games at the end of last season. he also seems to have shed a bit of that upper body weight he put on after returning from the knee injury, making him a bit quicker off the mark.

as i said to a friend a couple of nights ago when he said 'keegans 5/1 to be the first manager sacked next season'. how likely it is, is completely irrelevant to the bookies, they want people to look at the odds and think 'thats good value'. as we're hated by a lot of people at the minute, and seem ten minutes from catastrophe most of the time, they'll pick up a bit of money by setting our odds like that. betting against newcastle is a status symbol for some cockneys. i have an annual bet with a cockney on a different forum, he backs us to go down every season, i've made £40 from it so far.

This attitude is really starting to annoy me. Some fans seem to be supporting the manager more than the club these days. Keegan isn't a miracle worker, especially when he's only got s*** players to turn into world beaters. I say one word and you question my attitude. Who the fuck are you to judge. Keegan spreads optimism. He makes the team play better football than fatty sam. At least well enjoy it more. If I was as prejudgemental as you, I would say you need some prozak. Too many years of wrong decisions being made and wrong players brought in. It's going to take years to turn around, and too many people are hoping for an over-night success now the"saviour" is back. i dont think the even the most confident people think we'll have over night success. fans need something to cling onto to believe in their club, if you think 80% of the club is shit can you really blame people for looking to him for the drive and inspiration? thats what a manager's job is after all isnt it, to lead from the front and motivate us all, players and fans alike? given what he's done here before, if KK isnt enough for you to have some optimism then i reckon you should give up. and dont start putting things like "saviour" and "messiah" in quotation marks, you look like a cockney journo. 3 or 4 posts up, look at the avatar. there's a difference between the fans being worried (i was) and the club being in a relegation fight though surely? we had a shit season but i dont think we were in a proper relegation battle
