Different type of player to Barry though isn't he? I'd say Barry is a more cultured, technical player who I'm guessing will get a lot of assists over the season. Barton is more of an aggressive, box to box player. Bit of a poor mans Steven Gerrard. My team would have both of them in Gordon Richards King Lescott Baines Arteta Barton Cahill Barry Elano Anelka

I've been impressed with Rob Green over the last 6 months. For me, he's better now than when he was actually getting picked in the England squad during his Norwich days.

I wasn't that fussed about signing him, thought he was just a decent full back and no more. Had some worries about his size and actual defending. I've been pleasantly surprised by how good he actually is though especially since he's not fully fit yet. Great outlet going forward, pretty comfortable in possession, decent cross on him, cracking long range shot and for such a slight guy he doesn't let much past him. For me, there isn't one stand out left back in this league. Ashley Cole doesn't look the player he was at Arsenal imo. I'd say him, Baines, Evra, Bale (early days yet mind) and Clichy are all much of a muchness.

They'll offer him more and he'll sign the contract soon. Bit of a non-story this, just making sure he gets the deal he wants.

That's a lazy assumption really. Look at Liverpool for example. They have won the FA Youth Cup, what, two years in a row now? How many of those lads have got a decent chance in the first team even in cup competitions? None really. A few appearances between the lot of them. Benitez is buying up foreign youngsters like it's going out of fashion at the minute. Was Gabriel Paletta, one of the worst centre halfs I've seen in the the last few years of the Premiership worth paying £2.5m for? I find it very, very hard to believe that one of their homegrown prospects of a similar age would have done a worse job. Even some of the older foreign players he has brought in have been s****. Nunez, Pellegrino, Kromkamp... these players got opportunities in the first team that English lads on the books won't even get a sniff of just because they are foreign. Staying with Liverpool, look at Jamie Carragher. For several years he was a decidedly average fullback. It was only with match experience, coaching and eventually moving him into the centre that he became a good player. Would a young defender of the same ilk get that opportunity now? No f****** chance. It's all about instant results so spending a few million to have Jaime Carragino as your 3rd/4th choice player is what tends to happen. It's not just LFC that do this either. Lots of clubs are guilty of it and it tends to be clubs who don't/didn't have massive finances who have brought through good kids in recent years- Boro, West Ham, City and ourselves. I don't think that's a coincidence.

I would like to see a limit on squad size and, within that, a minimum number of English players Say.... a 28 man squad with at least 8 English lads? Arsenal take the piss really. If every club had a squad like theirs then it would be a sad state of affairs imo.
