If we aren't going to use our few promising youth players as emergency cover in the event we have 3-4 injuries at CM, then when the heck are they going to get a chance?

Refreshing honesty. Don't know much about him off the pitch from his time at Everton so it may be that he's been like this all along, but from the outside looking in he seems to have matured a lot in a short space of time.

Did ok. Worked hard off the ball. Neat first touch passing. Seemed to handle the tempo better than against Villa. Other than that not much to note positively or negatively.

Can't remember where I saw it, probably on here in some capacity, but if I remember correctly he understands English and speak English with the team, but he's not comfortable doing it in interviews.

Don't think Almiron will be here long enough to get past him, but hope Joelinton can at least keep up the numbers he had last season and get past him in 4-5 seasons. Think it was aimed at the ref for ending the game when the ball went out for a corner to Villa.

Don't think it matters much in the grand scheme. The only time I really hear about Mbappe is in the summer transfer windows and only time I see anything of him is if there's a major international cup going on. If he goes to SA he'll become even more irrelevant. The model they are implementing isn't sustainable, and think they'll scrap their plans within 5 years leaving the only people happy being the handful of players who managed to milk them for as much money as possible during this period.

Genuinely think Howe was experimenting with the formation/tactics due to how Villa played us second half of last season. Maybe he saw some things that worked and some that didn't which the team will work on ahead of the season opener. Wouldn't rule out that we'll see a similar looking formation later on.

Easily our best player at attacking the ball on set pieces too. Probably our best in areal duels generally.

Played as the deepest of our central midfielders most of the first half he played. Mostly responsible for Villas first goal, generally seemed to struggle a bit with the tempo/physicality. Good learning experience for him though.
