Whether or not he's good enough for a top-4 team as a starter, he's definitely good enough as a squad player for a top-4 team - And we're not a top-4 team yet, not by a long way. So aside from just not getting ahead of ourselves, even if we were a top-4 team (which we're not) then I'd still want him around. For the fees quoted, for a young English fullback who can play for the next 7 or 8 years at a very high level, the fees quoted make it a no-brainer.

He has been and still is a very decent player. Whether that's enough to keep him at the club given our shifting ambitions, time will tell. But whatever his future I wish him well.

This is an important point and one that I didn't appreciate fully until the Palace game. Until then, I'd been incredibly impressed by watching him on TV. Then I saw him live and was just in absolute awe of him.

Be delighted if we signed him. He'll be at least 7/10 every week, absolute minimum. Often more. So solid and consistent, and utterly reliable. Sure he's not a flair player, he's no Cafu, but we need depth and we need English players too. He could play a really big part for us for many years. Given the fees bandied about, I reckon he's an absolute bargain and we'd be mad to not sign him if the opportunity is there.
