He seems better then Routledge to me, not as much raw pace but better control and runs with his head up. I actually rate Routledge anyway, wouldn't be upset to keep him.

With Gervinho I agree with you, as he might have the likes of Arsenal and Man City to choose from. But I don't see any reason why N'Zogbia would choose to join someone like Villa instead of coming here, unless he purely picks his new club based on who offers the highest wages. They're just as average as us, but without the stadium, fans and past history with him that we have. I don't disagree that players usually look after themselves, I just think in this individual case we have a head start over similar clubs.

Why? Because he's been reported to still have an attachment to Newcastle/friends here etc, and we have Ben Arfa, Tiote and Cabaye to be his French-speaking mates.

They could easily both have a place in the squad, and as people have said, even the team if we don't sign another winger (Gerv). Never had time for the criticism of Jonas, we all know his crossing isn't excellent but he's very valuable to our team in all sorts of ways. Very aroused by the idea of Jonas, Zog, Ben Arfa, Cabaye and Tiote running out together.

I still got more of a thrill watching Ronaldo muscle a defender and latch on to a through ball than I do seeing Messi dribble around people and score. Maybe because I was younger then, or I wanted to play centre forward myself.

But choosing Smith on the bench over Gosling would be a separate decision. I don't think there's any evidence he "brings the squad down", except obviously by lowering the average ability level.
