Clear and obvious error doesn’t solve anything, it just introduces another level of subjectivity. Makes it worse if anything, or at least harder to understand.
-
The ‘instinctive’ aspect was what I was saying earlier. That’s the only justification I can see. The second defender near Longstaff doesn’t matter, Felipe’s action is the one that could have played him back onside.

Mark of our progress that we didn’t just extend him for a body. He’s bottom 6 quality at best. Like the kid but he just doesn’t have the lungs or the body for elite football.

I know it’s a meme how much I mention his bandages, but both legs and both arms strapped up is really weird for a footballer -

I want to give him as many chances as possible but the easiest option is to let him go this summer. -
If you believe he deliberately tried to clear it then it’s not offside anyway. By the law.
-
I think the only possible thing is that they decided Felipe’s intervention was instinctive and he didn’t have time to react, which means he didn’t play Longstaff back onside. FWIW I didn’t know that line was in the rules and I’m not convinced the officials know either. And they don’t explain, so who knows.
-
They showed it on sky but I can’t remember what exactly. There was a line about the defender making an instinctive reaction and not a deliberate considered move. I’m not arguing for it but that’s the only line I could think could justify it.

The finish was unbelievable, total composure on his face as well.

Best he’s played by miles. Think he’s definitely a forward and not a CM. At the moment. -
There’s one debate about the decisions being right or wrong, and there’s another about the mechanisms of VAR IMO. That goal last night was a subjective decision, I don’t agree with it but I guess the part of the rule they were using was that the CBs action was instinctive and not controlled etc. Different people will always come up with different judgements on that, that’s the nature of the laws. They aren’t black and white. So a replay doesn’t help a right decision except that it gives someone a chance to see something that they might have missed. Even that aspect itself is annoying, but I think we could get used to it if everyone knew the rules and the decisions were explained. So I would say the referees have to use consistent, known hand signals and they have to be put on mic for 15 seconds to set out the decision. In the stadium and on TV. Either the on-field referee or the VAR. Things like the handball situation we’re in, that’s the fault of the rules. The addition of VAR just means that things that humans would ignore or not notice are now having to be examined. That makes the rules of football look bad, because they aren’t up to that level of scrutiny. Bit of a ramble but basically the combo of subjective rules, forensic examination of petty, minor infringements and the lack of communication to fans make the whole thing a shitshow. It’s probably right than it results in a slightly higher percentage of “correct” decisions, but it has wreaked havoc on the game to get there.

This is a little bit harsh. I haven't spontaneously decided not to celebrate goals... I've learned over a season that there are lots of goals that look perfectly fine but will later be ruled out for invisible infringements. That has conditioned me not to celebrate because I know there is a period following a goal where a team of people are looking for ways to rule it out. I don't know the numbers but it feels like the number of disallowed goals is much higher than it was before. Sometimes I forget and celebrate normally but a lot of the time I don't.
-
At the very least they should have to explain the decision. When they’ve decided, switch on the mic for 15 seconds. “Goal disallowed, offside, defender plays the ball accidentally therefore attacker is still offside”. Kind of thing they do in NFL. If they are going to keep this ridiculous situation they at least have to communicate what happened.

Spoke well after the game, fair play. However, glad he plays for them and not us.

Panicked a bit when I thought Trippier was taking the pen

Problem is he wouldn't reliably execute, he would mess up loads of key moments. Has been better recently though, perhaps limiting what he attempts as well.

Think it would definitely help to have a bit of promotion and engagement ahead of the next elections, or even just in general about what the trust actually does. I’m not sure everyone who gave £1 in the hope of getting rid of Ashley can really be considered an active member. Albeit I don’t know what the numbers and joiners/leavers have been since then. It’s a really bad sign that more people don’t go to meetings and didn’t stand for election. I basically believe the best about the people involved, just maybe there needs to be a bit more activity geared towards really engaging the fans.

Watched that yesterday, noticeable how many more assists he would have if people in our team could finish. I'm instinctively not his biggest fan in CM because he isn't the neat, tidy and compact style that I like. But I've been really impressed recently and I hope we can find a way to accommodate him, Bruno and Joelinton in midfield.

Not sure how good the Palace squad is mind. Two good CBs, some unproven attackers and nothing in midfield.

It’s almost like he knows what he’s doing.

I can’t remember it clearly, but was the Gullit sacking just about dropping Shearer? Surely if he’d dropped Shearer but continued to get great results… no worries.
