Southgate was more selected for a rebranding job on English football though, I’m not sure how much was to do with tactics or style. The job was toxic and everyone hated the national team. They needed a nice man in an M&S waistcoat to bring people together. Arguably they’ve persisted with him a bit too long, but I’m not sure how good a job international management is anyway. The elite managers aren’t doing it.

There's probably a middle ground. I agree we don't necessarily need a purely defensive midfielder, but I think we do need to make sure the signings are complementary and whoever we bring in is going to amplify the abilities of the others. At the moment we have quite a random collection of midfielders, only Shelvey really has a role and that's mainly because he can't run. Obvious statement I know.

Sadly those three teams have much, much better players than we do. Particularly in terms of creating and finishing chances.

Long-term probably sign an AM and a DM and ditch Big Joe.

I think also the combination with Joelinton is particularly bad, because neither of them are good at passing the ball around with zip and attacking intent.

I'd say also, we had to play counter-attacking football because the players we randomly signed weren't capable of keeping possession and would always be outplayed by the opposition.

I'm not convinced Joelinton is going to be a PL central. midfielder either TBH, we need to sign 2.

I don't rate him at all, I don't know what his strengths are meant to be. Certainly he's not well suited to being a CM in a 3. In hindsight we probably shouldn't have signed him after his loan, but I guess we didn't have anyone else's phone number at the time.
