Townsend was clearly available and I'm sure there are more than one player for the positions we could pursue. We had a whole month and god knows how many months before to scout a nd check availability etc. It might have been Rafa's decision. He may have drawn up some targets and some wouldn't drop down leaving Townsend as the only option and they might have been asking for too much or he might not have wanted to come. Even if we paid 12 Million for him it would be good value considering what other players who would perform similarly in the Championship would cost. He would probably be as if not more effective in this league than say knockaert but he would cost us 15 Million plus.
