To go with any money we spend, I would be happy for us to go for out of contract players like Larsson and Elmander. If nothing else, they would be an improvement on our current squad players.

I can imagine we'll get no one in to replace Carroll. They'll gamble on the current squad being enough to get the points to keep us up. I can't say I'd want us to pay over the odds on a replacement player we've barely had any time to look at. Maybe a loan player if we're lucky.

I wouldn't even count Xisco leaving as losing a player from the squad. He would only ever get a game if Carroll, Ameobi, Best, Ranger and Lovenkrands weren't fit. Good luck Xisco. Anyone wondering why we want a midfielder: - Smith is out for the season (no great loss). Gosling is having exploratory surgery on his knee so will be out for a while. Routledge has been loaned to QPR. Tiote picks up a yellow card nearly every game so we can expect suspensions for him. Ben Arfa isn't likely to be back until March at the earliest. Apart from them we only have Barton, Nolan, Guthrie and Gutierrez. We need experienced cover.
