perhaps not even the quality, more the suitability for that system is the key it's alright saying good players should be able to play any system but virtually reversing a players football education is not gonna work...if you began life as a workmanlike player and then developed more skill then the bolton/chelski system would suit you...the other way around and it's a lot harder the successes/failures so far under sam bear that out
-
Agree. We were going nowhere fast under Roeder, and its even worse with Big Sam at the helm. Thing is, if you could see shreds that something positive is taking shape. But there is no sign whatsoever of anything good about to happen given time. Quite the opposite actually. great point, well made the ONLY thing i can say is positive so far is that he's not pissed away a load of money, but that might be 'cause he never had any suppose the medical/fitness/scouting things he's doing might qualify but they're very hard to quantify right now

Its not really about "entertaining the fans". Its about Sam Allardyce producing a side that uses some of his methods that has been successful but using our squads attacking talent producing a side that can also contain but actually penetrate the opposition, stretch the opposition, getting our talented attacking players higher up the pitch in the right areas (N'Zogbia, Martins); creating partnerships in the side Viduka playing 12 yards off Martins, Mark linking the play Oba stretching the opposition; Ultimately I think Sam needs to make the opposition think about containing us if he is to get the balance right. i'm not suggesting it is pandering to the fans but i'm suggesting it's presumably how allardyce would view it now how else to explain his vehement adherence to something that clearly doesn't work when the people who pay his wages are crying out, literally, for something else? it must be a losing face issue with him now, no other explanation
-
I agree. I can see similarities to the side that only needed Bellas and Robert to promote us well up the table. I was thining the exact same thing during the Chelsea game. A right-winger and a centre-midfielder, i reckon. With N'Zogbia on the wing too. think it simplies matters a bit - unless those two players plus the rest do a spontaneous hollywood style turnaround where they ignore the coach and play the beautiful game or some such shit.... you could put ronaldinho/kaka in that team but if allardyce is making him track back on 50 yard runs or mark midfielders what'll it acheive? new players will have to combine with a new philosophy or there's no point spending the money
-
anyone think allardyce just isn't half as smart as he thinks he is? or half as good a coach as he thinks he is? alls he has to do now is what Gallowgate End suggests, call it pandering to the fans if you like but send the team out to entertain a bit and score some goals playing to the strengths of the players he has if, deep down, he truly believes that his style of play is the way to succeed then he could change things slowly and in the background so that in 3-4 years time we find ourselves in the champions league all praising big sam 'cause he was right all along however sticking to the only system he appears to know with players he admits aren't good enough/can't/won't play it right now is nonsense adapt or die...right now he's dying - is he a good enough coach to adapt? it appears he's not
-
if yakubu went to everton for 11m then he's worth more than that, plane and simple i find the whole thing laughable - when you have 2 strikers like owen and viduka then having a striker like martins is perfect...we have the consistent "what you see is what you get" from those two and in martins we've got the unexpected "can conjeur up something amazing" factor perfect conbination...what's the point in bemoaning his finishing? that's not what he's all about...fair enough people were maybe justified in complaining last year when he was basically our only striker but now we should be focusing on what he CAN do, not what he can't if we get martins using his strengths well and owen/viduka doing the same we'll not be in bad shape
-
I actually want Owen to go, he looks so disinterested he should be made to leave. The Reading and part of the Watford games he played he was the same. And he looked more interested when he was playing against Blue Star in the reserves than he did yesterday. Get him gone, and spend the money on someone who actually wants to play for us not so sure that's the problem with the lad, desire, i'd say it comes down to his utter inability to fit into the new system.... he's being made to run areas he's not used to and it appears to me he doesn't like it and seems unable to adapt allardyce has his teams set up for 11 men to play at 100% the whole time and do the job allocated to them, if owen doesn't fulfill either of them then he's doomed at the club if we could get 9m for him now and a player of anelkas ability (moods notwithstanding) to replace him we'd be doing very, very well indeed problem is no-one in the known world is gonna touch his wages, never mind the fee

To sell papers, man. How hard is that to understand? If you notice, every f****** Sunday there is some EXCLUSIVE in one of the red-tops, some outlandish story designed to get to #1 on NewsNow and more importantly to sell lots of papers to people who love to read something, anything about Newcastle United. It's not just us who gets this treatment from the papers, despite what some people will have you believe, I'm sure MJ, brummie, Dr. Spec, 1878, SAFC and others will come on and say exactly the same - that their club gets dross written about it on a regular basis, especially in the Sunday rags. Ask yourself how many weekends go by where we don't feature in anything paper-wise, apart from a match preview/review, and then think about why this is. Just because a lot are based in the South doesn't mean they don't need to flog papers in the North East. I don't think it's that hard to believe that journalists, qualified or not, do this sort of thing because they get massive f***-off wage packets from their national papers and help their employers to sell more and more copy to idiots who believe everything they write. They aren't writing for the good of their health or to report the facts, they are writing to keep their jobs, their massive wages and to keep selling papers for their employer. It's the nature of the business, by and large, although some are obviously worse than others and it's why after initial interest in becoming a sports journalist myself/a fair bit of research into what it entails, I've veered away from that path altogether. yeah, cheers for that, to sell papers....never thought of that 'cause i'm a fucken idiot i suppose i was pondering the thought process more than anything but never spelt it out enough...what i mean is you're sitting in london wanting to sell papers in the north-east, how do you get to the point of writing something totally and utterly invented? especially, as i said, something as stupid ad claiming ashley is gonna sell the club 2 months afer buying it bit of rhetorical question all told, and as you point out getting well paid for writing utter garbage probably helps them sleep at night capitalism 101 as well ain't it? if there's no market for unfounded shite to be written then it doesn't get written...so i suppose there's only the people who believe this type of nonsence to blame

nah, certain things are just written in advance and perserverance changes nothing tommasson was the same...had potential but the pace/passion/strength/heart or whatever you want to call it weren't there, thus the right move for NUFC was to ship him, regardless of the fact he went on to do very well elsewhere certain things are good for the club and certain things are good for the individual...this summer the luque and dyer deals have satisfied both of those.... I'd say for John Dahl was the fact he was completely played out of position in his only season in a new country and a lot tougher league. I think if Shearer had never got injured and Asprilla never got injured/sold, we would have seen John Dahl slowly brought in, given time to adjust to the league. But he ended up leading the line on his own, in a role that was just something he was never suited to do, as he has always been more of a 2nd striker. I'd say that miss against Sheff Wed on his league debut about summed everything up for him, from that moment on his confidence looked shot. aye that's what i'm saying...if you remember at the time we were just hoping after hope he was gonna come good, that he'd get used to the pace and stop needing the extra time on the ball but it never happened you're right in that things might have been different if jon dahl had been brought through bit by bit but basically he wasn't and he was found wanting - for me there was never any going back....bigger clubs than us can afford that time/money but we've never really been able to do that have we? luque had enough time to adapt to the physical side, much more than JDT did and he's older, and the point i'm making is that save for a few deluded souls who thought allardyce was gonna turn him into a genius the majority of us knew that it was either leave or sit out his contract never playing best deal all round
-
looks a bit like dabo doesn't he? maybe allardyce is getting him in to curb joey's aggresive side, or aggravate it?
-
reading?!! reading... who the hell would vote for reading? what on earth could there be to hate about them? must be three people who were having a night out and tapped some fat lasses or something, what else could it be? is there a more inoffensive club?

wouldn't it be great to know the truth about the stories we've heard since the takeover? firstly what are ashley's intentions? short and long term...? financial and football? secondly, and more importantly, if none of it's (selling up) true then WHY THE FUCK do the journalists bother making up stuff about NUFC when they're predominantly based in the South? from my point of view it's unthinkable that a businessman like ashley would invest such a sum of money so fast in a club only to sell up unless he had already guaranteed the sell-on at a massive profit....we all know he's not a spurs/toon fan but a shrewd businessman so what the fuck would make him sell up and go to spurs? his mate being there, not likely...no sentiment in business spurs being a better prospect than NUFC...don't make me laugh; to compete with other clubs they'll need to build a stadium like, er, we've already got and have a profile throughout europe and the world like, er, we've already got...to name but two reasons so what is it? i'm fucked if i know but if they taught me in journalism 101 to make up such a pile of shit i'd have walked out and become a binman...a four year-old wouldn't come up with such shite!
-
tend to agree, i'd say we'll be close to a european spot of some ilk come the end of the season or farting about just out of reach like last season, blowing every good chance we get.... if we start well this season then i reckon we're laughing 'cause as the season progresses and allardyce's methods become the norm we'll improve rather than get worse....problem is if we have another bad start (over say 8-10 games) like usual all we'll be doing is trying to get to where we should have been a win today would go LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way to sorting our season out like for what it's worth i think people should be keeping an eye on liverpool for the title this year, if they're careful they're gonna be challenging for once...bout time really from their point of view, and a strong liverpool can only be good for the title procession that has become the EPL
-
i've dug the kid since the first time i saw him play, hopefully a good manager like allardyce and staying injury free (fingers crossed) could see him have a VERY good season indeed in that event though, it'd be nice to have that release clause out of his contract 'cause however sound he may be if he bullets 30 goals this season and juve/real/milan or someone come calling it might well turn his head...13m IS NOT a high price for someone with his talent given bent went for 17m!!! i'm still vaguely amused by some of the talk on this board from people willing to cash in on him during the summer panic-fest!! in fact i'm laughing about it again, clowns....

Actually lad I didn't mention anything about the reason for him leaving the club, simply pointing out how hypocritical some people seem over the whole thing (not you, I mean in general) and that he's been a big part of the success the club has had in recent years. I'm not looking for a bite out of anyone, perhaps I should stick with the stock reply of the majority of the idiots on here and wish he breaks his legs etc, if it'll keep you happy. You know that's not what I meant at all. And, as proven, there are idiots who have hated Dyer whether he's been good or bad, injured or fit, scoring or not-scoring, that's never been my game and it never will be. It's also not what I was getting at. I don't see people like that as being hypocrites, they've stuck to their bong-eyed line from day one. Personally I think we might miss him on the park for the reasons you mention, but he had to go now, so there's no point crying over spilt milk. But we've replaced a player who didn't want to be here with a player who does, the quality difference between them as players is minimal if you ask me and is far less clear-cut than you're making it out to be, but the attitude thing could play a major role in determining how well they do for their respective clubs. Dyer was a spent force here, but might recapture something like his best form at West Ham and good luck to the lad, but surely Smith is a step in the right direction for a number of other reasons, not just his playing ability? You're looking at things as very black and white here, no pun intended, more goes into how well players do at club's than your opinion on who the better one is. Smith isn't the better of the two, in your opinion, but you're ignoring the fact that he might be exactly what Allardyce wants in his team for how he wants us to play. I don't see a role for Dyer in the 4-3-3/4-5-1 thing, personally, especially a Dyer who didn't want to be here a minute longer. My original point was that a lot of people saw KD as the last piece of the past that needed to go and now he's gone I'd assume it will do nothing but increase the feelgood factor around the club, be it right or wrong. Like I said, I can appreciate both sides of the argument, but at the end of the day more people wanted him gone than wanted him to stay so we've got happier fans and a replacement who will hopefully be given a chance to show what he can do. Smith is Dyer's replacement, if you ask me. You're right on that. bingo mate you've hit the nail on the head, smith might not have the pace of dyer (and let's be honest with ourselves - that's basically all dyer has going for him, good technique and control as well if we're being generous) but he'll fit into the managers plans a whole lot better i'm not sure where the worry about losing dyers pace is coming from...running charlie n'zog is fast, duff is fast when fit, milner isn't as fast but he's sharp minded and quick over a short burst, obagoals is diabolically fast and owen's pace is well documented, geremi ain't slow and no-one has seen this spaniard play yet.... so what, honestly, are we really losing in that respect? looking at the first game it seems allardyce is an astute enough coach to able to help martins use his pace more effectively, so if i had a magic time machine i wouldn't have minded seeing what he could do with dyer over a season, but seeing as we don't have a way to turn back the clock come the end of another disappointing season i think moving him on for a known quantity is an astute move..... dee-dee-diddly-dee

Dyer played a big part in the 3 top 5 finishes the club achieved, don't you agree? He's also a better player than his replacement. who is his replacement? and no i don't really think you could cite dyer as playing a "big part" of that period - he was there from time to time on the pitch but i'd argue that any actual influence was largely from robert, bellamy, given and shearer in the main....dyer falls in with the rest of the squad in simply not being appalling, he was no better or no worse than jenas, in fact jenas was probably considerably more influencial that's my take, different horses for different courses though....

If his exit is making a canny few people feel like this, then I'm happy about it as well. Not fussed either way initially, but anything to improve the general mood of the fanbase is useful. How many are saying this because he's gone though in the same way they did with Parker, Bellamy and Jenas? Plenty on here were singing Dyer's praises earlier in the season. I would have been happy for Dyer to stay as I've seen what having a player with pace can add to the team, he was a big part of the clubs success under Robson and he could have been again under Allardyce, he was below standard under Souness and Roeder but he wasn't the only one. I may have been happier about the move if we hadn't replaced him with an inferior player in Smith, shame about that. DEE-DEE-DIDDLY-DEE can only speak for myself but i reserve no vitriol for any of those you name...they were either deluded about their own ability (jenas), somewhat unfairly treated and then didn't help themselves (parker) or basically acted in a way no-one should have been surprised about seeing as he'd done it all his career and continues to do so (bellamy) but dyer....mein got! now there's some hatred i'm gonna enjoy not having to expend now....
-
is this the greatest piece of transfer business ever conducted by the club? my vote is yes, don't care about anything else - we got 6m minimum for a total waste of space, plus taking a conservative estimate of his wages for the last 2 years of his contract we've saved another 6m!!!! add to that the fact that the players who are now likely to get more games 'cause he's gone (zog/milner) are younger, hungrier, more consistent, more productive and basically will play more games for the club dee-dee-diddly-dee (that's me doing a jig around the office, been going on for 8 hours now since i read the internet this morning!!!)
-
eriksson blows my mind, i just don't get what people see in him he chequebooked the title at lazio to all intents and purposes and that nearly drove the club under, however many years later they're still suffering from that period (albeit it's the chairman/owner to blame of course) with england he was diabolically well paid to do what amounts to an average job overall (credit where it's due he qualified us no bother every tournament mind) and now once again he's being paid handsomely to basically play a real-life game of football manager let's be honest is sven doing anything that anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of the game and a video recorder couldn't do? i'm not so sure.....

You need to add Owen to that list. when fit. owen scores. so adds somethign to the team. i also feel dyer adds to the team if brought on as a sub late on in a game He hasn`t scored since 2005 not including the friendly goal for obvious reasons . We don`t really know if he is going to keep breaking down now. when owen is fit he scores, never been in doubt, thus he's a totally different prospect to dyer who produces virtually the same whether he's fit or unfit Hopefully Owen will continue to do well but who knows, he has been out virtually 2 years and is out again. I just feel he should be in the Baba and Dyer catergory. If given equal opportunity I feel Martins will out score Owen this year. dunno how you can write that with a straight face to be honest - you're talking about putting englands second (or third) all time goalscorer with baba and dyer the ONLY thing they have in common is persistent injuries....ability-wise they're in different leagues entirely therefore firmly not in the same category

love how people are trying to put a positive spin on this, we've just figuratively taken a revolver and blown our brains all over the carpet if dyer had gone we were then only 2 unfit, inept and overpaid players away from being able to start afresh and anew to me only three players in the squad (dyer, baba, carr) combine the specical features of being perpetually unfit, virtually useless when fit and also being paid proposterous wages for their returns we have a manager who could get replacements for these clowns for relatively low fees and we'd wipe a huge stain off the wage bill and the squad who gives a shit if west ham tapped him up? you kick off when teams tap up the players you want, not the ones you don't!!!! allardyce obviously doesn't want/need him so why the hell does ashley care we'll have this little bastard for another season now guaranteed, or maybe someone will loan him for wages only but i don't see who owners come and go at nufc but the fuckups continue unabated
-
does anyone really care, i mean honestly? most people (IMO) heard the 6m fee for this little ratboy and were delighted the manager who people supposedly trust (now) was evidently happy to take that money for someone with his record/attitude yet lo and behold (allegedly) the owner of the club who has no track record in football intervenes and potentially ruins our prospects of getting shot of him 6m was good enough last week and it's good enough now - if it turns out we fleece west ham then great but i've a feeling alls we'll end up with is a player on massive wages who will feel he's been treated badly by the club same pish happened to milner last season but to his credit milner put it behind him - i fear we won't see such a professional attitude from kieron "the player that never was" dyer
