He only did well when paired with Zamora, I bet the stats would show that. He's a 4-4-2 poacher in the Darren Bent mould, albeit with a slightly different type of profile.

I hope he keeps these up. It's good to have an articulate, intelligent manager conveying his thoughts.
  3. The most depressing part of watching Colback last season was when he would aimlessly press on his own and the ball would get passed straight by him into a striker. Cue the gormless look around and wonder why that's just happened. At best, this guy can be a serviceable cog for a manager that knows what he's doing tactically, and plays a 3 man midfield. But we knew that.

No doubt about it IMO. Gouffran used to be an average-to-OK wide forward slash striker. How he became a midfielder is one of the greatest mysteries of our time.

Even in the case of Centre Mids, Tiote and Abeid aren't there, Sissoko just cannot play CM unless it's in a 3, Wijnaldum isn't ready... He doesn't have much else to choose from in these few games beyond Anita and Colback.
  6. It's not like there's a massive difference in the quality of worldwide goalkeeping so that a team could consistently score with 30 yard potshots.

  8. Janmaat just seems like a bit of a loose cannon. I can't really put it any other way, but I don't get captain vibes from him. You could see he was thinking how shit Williamson was, how shit Carver was, etc. As fans that's great because it's what we are all thinking too, but the captain should be the manager's voice on the pitch, the organiser, the tactician, the disciplinarian. I don't get that from him.
  9. Giving it to De Jong would be equivalent to me starting a new job, then immediately taking a year off sick before returning to find out I've been offered a promotion.
  10. He's not vocal enough to be captain. No-one is, it's one of our biggest flaws. It's a pathetic list of options to choose from.
  11. He's a good player who doesn't get injured, generally leads by example, communicates with those around him, is assertive, and is disgusted by Mike Williamson. As much as I agree with him, showing obvious disgust toward your teammates is the opposite of captain material. In terms of an on pitch leader, the best of a bad bad bunch is Tiote, so I'd give it to him if he's going to be first choice, or leave it with Colo.
  12. Really can't see what Janmaat would offer as a captain like.
  13. Anita with these two in front of him like a triangle. That's what I'm hoping for!

    Steve McClaren

From Schteeve's perspective, might be better to leave Colo for his last season (not piss anyone off) and then give it to Wijnaldum after he's settled in for a year.
  17. Perfect fit for our new 4-3-3.
  18. That's not strictly true considering YoCabs was usually found sitting between the two centre halfs like. Tiote was regularly playing further forward. I believe in the Essien role. See bolded. What I meant was everyone else filled the gaps around Yo.
  19. The guy is absolute class. He's a playmaker who needs to be given freedom to do his own thing though, hence why he fitted perfectly in a team built around him to do everything and anything creative, while he had headless dogs like Tiote mopping up behind.

Aye, England won the tactical battle by far.
  22. Pearson strikes me as the kind of guy who shares things from 'Britain first' on Facebook.
