How's the ref making an offside decision on his own when it was clearly onside and why is he not brandishing a yellow for a clear cynical foul to stop us breaking away?

I am ambivalent, I am excited because it is a knockout game against the elite of the elite in Europe but recent circumstance makes me fear whats in front of us and I can't help but feel negative about that too. You're right there's much more nuance to it than fatigue, but its been done to death, this season Howe was on a hiding to nothing, the summer transfer business, the cartel taking all our first, second, third and even fourth choices, the Isak situation, the DoF situation, the Wissa situation. I'm not saying Howe is faultless in all of this but come on, let's be objectively honest here, fatigue isn't an excuse, it's a fact, and there are a plethora of mitigating factors to the season playing out the way it has from the start.

I think thats probably when the fatigue starts to drip in and like you say when you're playing a top side like Man City that has an effect on the players, the fatigue is as much mental as it is physical and after 30 minutes I can totally see the mental fragility piling up, the confidence starts to fade as the realisation sets in that weve give it everything and we've not done enough to see out the 90.

We've played more games and travelled further than any team in Europe this season, what is that 47 games now? 19 since January 1st and with a relatively small squad of any quality and carrying injuries to key players, you can't dismiss the fatigue.

I said it last week after Everton and I'll repeat it, we're still a high pressing team and our formation matches that but our intensity in the press is right down, probably due to the number of games and lack of player options, a mixture of fatigue and conservation. Its no surprise that a lot of our best football comes in the first 30 minutes of a game where we look like we can beat anyone and then it all falls apart. We're trying to play the same high press but without Isak we don't have the means to convert those chances and with the drop off in intensity we leave massive gaps to play though. I dont think theres a transition in play style, I just think we cant execute our play style except for the odd game.

Such a strong positive start and then we just buckled, we were never getting anything from the game as soon as their second went in. City just controlled us like marionettes for the rest of the game. But what can you do when their second string costs more than your club? Bringing on Foden, Cherki and Semenyo to see out a game is just taking the mick.
