Much like our current plight; how’s the midfield in front of him? That speaks more to defense in general. Maybe they’re a squad that can really retain possession, reducing the pressure off the CBs especially, but the defense on the whole.

Everyone seems incredibly obsessed with new CBs when in reality if we get even one new CM that can control the game, our current CBs will be totally fine for the rest of the season. We're losing the games in the middle of the park, not at the very back. Although we do need to get some new blood in at the back with the current contract/age situations of some of our defenders.

Another, why not both? type of question. Ake has proven PL ability, Botman doesn't but is only 21/22 so has a huge upside. Get both in (and Botman comes good) and we have our main CB pairing for the next few seasons at the very least. In the fantasy world where we get both, along with Digne, a back four of Trippier/Botman/Ake/Digne is the best back four outside of the what? top 6? 4? We'd be in great hands for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately Lascelles is club captain so I don't see him getting dropped. Although you'd hope that would be the case when we bring a new CB in.
