I think what will happen is he'll spend the first half of the season here getting the odd sub appearance, if he makes a big enough impact his role will gradually increase and if not he'll get a League One/SPL loan in January.

To be honest, if the wages we're saving from three who won't be 'replaced' by signings (Harper, Xisco and Gosling) and one other in Perch, along with the fees for the latter two mean we can have a bit more room for new signings then fair enough we're clearing the decks first. It only becomes a problem if we miss out on our targets while we're getting rid of some of the players that are supposed to being replaced/improved upon.

Aye but only if we're actually going to use him. Being an unused sub is a canny thing for a few weeks, because it gets him settled into the matchday routine and used to doing away trips with the first team squad etc. After that though it's an absolute waste of time if we just put bloody Shola on anyway instead of him.

This. Butt was generally awful but had a good season for us. Smith's probably the worst footballer I've ever seen who's spent years at NUFC. And, if you want to extend Butty's lead a bit, he scored a few canny goals. A pearler against Everton at home (3-2) and a couple of decent strikes at White Hart Lane anarl. Butt even wins in the non-competitive stakes; Smiffy's header against Sampdoria (from a Geremi corner ) is overwritten by Nicky's pair of headers against Villareal when he was getting booed with most of his touches.

I would say he's better than a League 1 player IMO. Probably needs a loan to a top-end Championship team for the first half of this season.
