Aren't those two points contradictory? Are suppose it means you pay higher wages for superior quality and relative to the quality of our current squad the figures are skewed as they are not worthy of the wages they are paid anyway.

People take far too much credence in what he says at any one point; partly because he rarely does but the guy is a proven liar and gigacunt. His actions over time speak far louder and that has shown he'll bust a gut to look after SD interests in the prem.

So much of the motivation relies on being in the big time. Put it this way, if he wants £400m* then Mike Ashley is the kind of person that will still want £400m after a couple of years in the Championship (in fact, he will probably want more as we will get less income down there). He won't flog us on the cheap, he just won't - otherwise he would have done that by now. *for the sake of argument, not saying that he does.
