As he does playing upfront on his own, playing him behind 2 forwards is best bet imo. We have friendlys next year. Should be tried imo.

You already said Rooney is Englands best player and had his best season playing as a lone striker in a 4-5-1/4-3-3, so wouldn't it be a waste for him to be put out wide in a front 3? Can't argue with Walcott & Johnson/Young out wide though. It needs to be tried. What we do know, is that he can be very ineffective in a 4-4-2. When he played in a 2 with Van Nistelrooj he was effective, but only because he primarily worked the channels. He could do that in a 4-3-3. It was tried, albeit 5 years ago. tbf i didnt really give it much thought. I just want us to try the formation with people playing in their preferred positions. And I think Rooney would benefit playing behind the two CFs. I don't think he does the CF role in 442 well at all and hes piss poor at being the lone man, just a waste. If we carry on playing with a Carroll like player up alone upfront, we should have Wallcott running off him, not gerrard.

I don't pay much attention to the championship but I've see Bothroyd play a few times when he was at wolves and I'm staggered he's been selected. Thought he was nowhere near prem standard back then (nor looked like he would get to be) Very pleased for carroll and I think he could actually be ideal for England. I think he could link up with Rooney given the chance which has always been our biggest problem imo.

The only time we troubled blackburn was when jose/jonas got in round the back. We had so many free kicks, long diagonal balls to carroll and shola that they just mopped up it was all too predicable. Irconically we scored from one of these due to a rare lapse in concentration from samba, but other than that he had carroll in his pocket. We should of had routledge on alot earlier, if not starting to give us some pace on the other flank and i would of brought on loven instead of ranger
