  1. All while never applying the same logic and doing anything to ask those in actual positions of power. It's not like they'd answer either but at least they have the answers.
  2. Can't believe this still needs to be said. Being charitable, if they're oligarchs or 'entrepreneurs' (without there being any difference in political influence) there's much less of a difference than we've been saying.
  3. No difference in terms of being qualified to answer the questions being put to Howe tbh.
  4. I would say that situation and how we got here is more of a concern than anything. Reminds me of how comedians became more competent political commentators than the media.
  5. I do mean it as a like-for-like comparison of the bit in bold. As in, our fans who might condemn the Saudis but will go through whatever thought process they need to to justify it to themselves because they don't want to make the sacrifice of not supporting Newcastle. Me and a fair few of us basically The thing that sticks in people's throats I think is that someone like Delaney thinks others should make sacrifices, but either doesn't seem to have done any self-reflection on the things he's unwilling to sacrifice, or has decided that his reasons are justifiable (hence the having a cake and eating it part), while our reasons aren't.
  6. Would have been New Labour at the time he was playing. I'll let him off, he wouldn't have been the first or last to have had the wool pulled over his eyes with them.
  7. If it's something they specialise in I don't mind if they are personally, but it clearly sticks in people's throats when some are both condemners and participants. You were talking about having our cake and eating it earlier, this is no different imo. If a journalist wants to both criticise the pawns in sportswashing and participate in it as pawns themselves - citing whatever sacrifice they're unwilling to make as their valid reason for participating in it - they're going to be just as open to finger pointing, especially from those they've criticised. 'well it'll just be someone else that goes to Russia if it's not me' isn't really any different to 'well if it's not Newcastle that's taken over, it'll just be some other club'
  8. I meant if they're the same person doing both (e.g. Delaney doing match reports) not separate people doing one and not the other.
  9. I've probably never respected him more for saying this tbh: The same public figures who rightly bemoan the lack of respect we give to experts in society are still more than happy to weigh in and push their opinions on really heavy subjects they aren't just not experts on, but actually know very little about. Someone essentially saying they don't know enough about something so shouldn't comment on it publically is music to my ears tbh.
  10. That part of his play reminds me of when Ross Barkley first came on the scene and there was a canny bit of hype around him.
  11. I think it depends. If they're there making the case for and reporting on sportswashing, that's a completely different story to them being there doing match reports and essentially participating in it.
  12. That's debateable like, Russia were up to much of the same as the Saudi's were, just in more of a Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy way that people aren't as repulsed by.
  13. They're doing exactly what any set of fans in their situation would do. The naïve incredulity and condemnation from other fans and snarky podcasters is at least understandable because they haven't experienced it first-hand. Our fans not understanding it is just bizarre considering what we've seen and the way our fanbase gets on the defensive about our situation even with none of the success Chelsea have had.
  14. The younger generation will be what we were like when people went on like that about Liverpool in the '90s. Wondering why the fuck they're all going on like that about a club that's absolutely nowhere near it.
  15. Atletico falling about and a poor ref falling for it... ...but it's vs Man United
  16. Imagine giving Fletch a fright. Imagine the noise.
  17. I didn't understand what that really meant at that age like. I just knew Gazza and that was enough for me. My dad isn't even really into football but he made sure I supported Newcastle like.
  18. When I almost supported 'Holsten' because I clocked this in Parishes on Shields Road after Italia '90 when I was 6. Not long after, my dad saw the figures of Gazza, Lineker, and Mabbutt in my room, he went out and got me a Newcastle strip and an annual. Without really knowing what had happened I supported Newcastle and my favourite player was Micky Quinn. I then got the ten out of ten video later and Gavin Peacock became my first proper favourite player. Can still vaguely remember the 2-1 O'Brien over the wall derby and very strongly remember the 7-1 vs Leicester. My auntie worked for Tyne Tees at the time and I got the script for the The Big Match (I think it was called) signed by Keegan, Terry Mac and all the players. I still have it now. My first match was the 4-2 Vs Sheff Wed with Alex Mathie scoring twice. Still remember the chants of Judas to Chris Waddle and Andy Sinton. Not understanding the connection, I just started calling all non-Newcastle players Judas. Then it was a case of getting to any match I could or going to The Odeon. I went to the Royal Antwerp 5-2 and missed the first 2 goals because my dad forgot the tickets, the Bilbao loss, losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup in 95/96 with Wise, Petrescu, De Matteo, and Gullit all becoming hate figures. Dalglish spoiled the party by shunning and then selling my favourite player (only for him to win the PFA player of the year award at Spurs) Lost interest in football altogether for ages then picked it back up perfectly in time for Souness becoming our manager.
  19. Correct me if I'm wrong like because I only watched the highlights, bit didn't Grealish set up two of Man City's biggest chances to KDB and Silva? We see quality players take time to integrate into new teams time and time again yet we're still so quick to write them off for some reason.
  20. Schar's far worse for it than Hayden now I think. It's gamesmanship a lot of the time imo so it doesn't bother me, but it's usually at least once a game he's down then makes a full recovery.
  21. Neville really needs to have a bit more humility about his lack of knowledge on these things tbh. I'm sure he has the best of intentions and he shouldn't be expected to know, but he's always very willing to push his very strong public opinions on things he (at least imo) has more or less no knowledge on. All while (rightly) bemoaning the lack of respect given to experts, which strikes me as contradictory It was only pre-Ukraine that he was insisting it's better to have the likes of MBS, Qatar, Abramovich around the table and to help them progress. He's now presumably realised the obvious (that he was being incredibly naïve) and will now push his new stance until he learns something new again.
