Sir Bobby did that to an extent. Brought in players under the radar of the then limited elite and/or youngsters with potential. There were more misses than hits though - basically Bellamy and Robert were the only ones that unquestionably raised us for all there were plenty of smart buys . That's not going to get us anywhere now when there's six teams ensconced and the bad spends on the Cort's, Bramble's and Viana's of the world in PSR climes would be far more damaging than then and were up against 5 Chelsea's who can just sign the top players. So cant blame them at all for trying to go for top players or ones above their current weight. Its what's raised teams/clubs before.
