James Milner - Good enough for Newcastle or not?

If I were Milner, I'd model my game on a mixture of Joe Cole and Beckham, two players who lack pace. Milner has Cole's footwork and brain while he is best suited to a wide right birth ala Beckham. He'll never be as good as those two but they are top-class players or were in Beckham's case.

Keegan often said of himself that he wasn't a naturally gifted player and that he had to work very hard at his game, Milner does the same, he works very hard.  He's no Keegan but as long as he is willing to work hard then he'll do OK.

So did Supermac who questions whether he'd make it today so poor was his general game or technique (his words), Milburn wasn't particularly gifted either when it comes to his general game or technique (again his own words). Even Shearer whose game for me was superb, was critical of his technique when starting out and Yet Milner actually has the technique, there are not many genuine two footed players around and players with his quick feet. It really is a shame he lacks pace because he'd be awesome with some, frightening in fact.

Milner is class, when he is on the left, he obviously wants to cross with his right as it is his stronger foot. Not mega fast but still goes past players and put good balls in. Can use both feet dont see what everyone problem is.

It's amazing that Milner's never been tried out for anyone in central midfield really. Since his lack of pace is his major flaw, you'd think someone would have stuck him in there. Not in a central pairing, but as one of a central trio, why not?

Something that does actually annoy me about Milner, he does quite often try and get back onto his right foot but he has shown on numerous occasions he doesn't need to. He has put in some lovely balls with his left, I wish he had a little more confidence in it.

Yea I agree with that, ie palermo. Far as im concerned easily good enough for NUFC, one of our best players.

I want to see him play on the right of a 4-4-2 with N'Zogbia on the other side, think that could be very good.

He'll always be a very handy player to have but I'm not sure he'll ever be a top player. If Allardyce wants to go 4-3-3 long term then I don't see where he'll fit in though, as some sort of pace is absolutely essential to play the wide roles in that system. Reckon he'd do well as one of a 3-man midfield either.

He'll continue to improve though and his ability to play both flanks make him a very valuable member of the squad.

N'Zogbia is a vastly better prospect though in my opinion.

Taylor used to play him there for U21's

When you look at the question "Milner good enough for Newcastle" the sorry answer is yes

ive said this before ...Milner is an averasge player.....not a loser but hes definately not a winner either

Newcastle need winners...Milner isn't

Bartons a winner

Martins a winner

Givens a winner

There are one or two more approaching this status but Milner, dont make me laugh

In fact when you look at it coldly Newcastle are still pretty much bereft of high quality

Milner was touted around for sale at the start of last season....NO INTEREST

Grt the rose tinted off for christs sake, theres a difference between being positive and being blind faithful.

FACT..NOBODY WANTED TO BUY MILNER AT 5 MILLION..  simple as that

good enough for Newcastle, very sorry to say yes

What an awful, awful post.

sorry but the truth can hurt

get a hug from your mum

The truth can hurt can it?

Ok, here's a truth for you. Someone, namely Aston Villa, did want to buy James Milner for £5,000,000. Pick up a couple of paracetamol for the pain on the way out.

not just villa, when you ask a price for your player your asking anybody.

he was on the open market at 5 million ...no takers.. villa said no

theres no room for sentimentalist b****x at this standard of football

until  NUFC & the faithful stop accepting average players we wont truly challenge for top honours.

Sneaking the league or FA cup wont mean nothing until we can stand on a field with any of the top 5 and have a reasonable chance of beating them.

Right now we dont look anywhere near

IMO we are true underdogs n that aint good enough.

i dont accept "winnun sum silva ware" as recompense for years of piss poor managment

Newcastle deserve/should have a fearsome side capable of beating any team on just a good day

i,m as passionate about NUFC as anybody on here im just fed up with the mediocrity thats dished up and accepted

Owen (a world class finisher) was available for £9m this summer, although he had his injury problems with the prices as they are surely someone would take a gamble on him. Maybe he just isn't good enough  :undecided:

I think he's easily good enough for us. The only thing is he often has nothing to aim at (well our strikers aren't the best in the air) so when he puts balls across they seem wasted.

I'd like to see him participate in open play a bit more, little one two's to get in behind, running the channels that sort of thing. More often than not when he picks up the ball he is immediately looking to create a yard and then cross. Would just like him to add a tad more variety to his game, that would make him one of our most exciting players.

That's the difference between him and say, Bentley. When Bentley picks up the ball you know he could whip a good cross in, go on a little run and commit a few players or cut in and have a shot. that's the difference between a good player (milner) and a match winning player (bentley). He has got the potential imo to develop these things so that's why im more than happy with him.

Villa didn't say no, you clown. He was sat waiting to sign until Boro told us to fuck off for Viduka.

I like how we "don't look anywhere near" beating any of the top 5. Must have imagined the double over Spurs, the win over Liverpool and the various other points taken off the top 5 last season - with a shit team.

Last season we were 13th in the league, we're not going to become world beaters over night, if at all.  We need players like Milner to help take us in the right direction.

Mickey Owen would never score with his head.

The ball has to be inch perfect basically. Owen would capitalise on about 1 cross out of 5 Milner would put in. Maybe a tad generous even.
