Newcastle United 1 - 4 Portsmouth - 03/11/07 - Post match reaction from page 21

Recommended Posts

Fuking terrible result, but anyone who thinks he doesn't deserve at least a season is mental.

What he can bring in in terms of off the field activities this club has been crying out for, for years. That job isn't done yet, i'd like to see those foundations in and working before dismissing him.

But he does have to improve on the field, he's been well below average and today is hopefully the kick up the arse HE needs as much as the team needs.

Have Portsmouth any bearing on this result? They arent a pub team remember

It's time we faced up to the reality that teams like Pompey are simply bigger and better than us. In all reality we are a lower-rung premier league team with a fairly formidible home ground which keeps us from getting relegated each year. Any kind of genuine quality will bring us undone every time, ditto any kind of genuine heart.

Pompey played decent, top 8 standard EPL football. You simply cannot play football like that when you have the likes of Milner, Butt, Smith and (on todays form) Barton in your side.

Simply put, we have the three shortest attackers going around on. They have one of the most physically big and strong back lines going. So our entire attack is lobbing in balls at head height to their defensive line. A-Grade tactics there. Like any professional outfit would do, they've sent that s*** back with interest.

Better, yes, a bigger club? No.  Harry has done quite well with them and it has taken a few years.  Allardyce has had months, chill out.  That goes for the rest of you knee-jerkers.

Tbf, did Pompey get bummed by Newcastle 4-1 at Fratton Park?

What does that have to do with anything?

The point in your first post seems to be in a few years Sam will sort it out the same way Harry sorted out Portmouth and that patience is needed.

Whilst this might happen, you have to concede that most managers that take a while to get things going don't get whooped at home by their league rivals. That's what happens to the Roeders and Souness' of the world.

Why not?  Teams get whooped all the time.  Recall Liverpool taking one on the chin to Arse last season.

10 minutes of shitty football, mate.  It doesn't mean anything long term.  I think Sam deserves the season.

Terrible display

Terrible team

Terrible tactics

Terrible result

Terrible post.

Sorry we were great everything is good Sam is great

So we should sack sam after 10 games then?

Well done mate, you've officially become the most unintelligle fan on this forum.

why not sack a manager after every game lost? if he loses, sack him, then get another one in until he loses, then sack him.

You see SUPERTOON, your thinking is pretty close to that.

were did i say sack him??? oh right no were but im not going to say these types of games  will happen that was a shocking display against a half decent pompey team if it had nder the two previous managers the reaction would be the same from everyone just because Sam did well at Bolton doesnt mean he cant be harshly critisced when deserved

Congratulations to Pompey! they played football the way we should play when we are away or better still the way they played today at home would be nice too. Their defense was rock solid and James! some pretty good saves from the man can't think of many Newcastle players that deserve a mention for playing good. Just a disappointing day all round really, Sam has definitely got his homework cut out  as we have some tough games coming up.

holy shit that was an utter shit performance. All of todays team were utter shit. ONLY i would touch with a stick from todays starting eleven is Butt. Cant belive we are sticking to Owen, and praising him, as he offer nothing, rather give him some competition for his place and perhaps he will shine again.

-Dissapointed.

José Mourinho cant manage an english club for like 2 years or something.

Quique Sanchez Flores is a young lad, he did really impressive things with Getafe which was his first job, he got Valenca the 3rd place in Ligue 1 in his first season, but got sacked because of some bad results.

We need to go foreign like someone said.

Yes, like Sven Goran Eriksson.  Until you get beaten 6-0 and then you have to sack them, and then 'go British', until that manager gets beaten and then you have to sack them, and 'go foreign'.

It's at times like this I wish many fans would go bloody interstellar rather than foreign, and launch themselves into the sun.

Its not hard. It isn't about 'going foreign.' It's simply about 'going for proven winners.' There aren't many English managers who have won anything recently, so the logical conclusion is go foreign. I'm all for giving Sam time if he looks like going somewhere. However tactically recently he has been bested with disturbing regularity, so you wonder how he is going to actually win anything.

(Don't say to me Souness was a proven winner, anyone can win titles with Rangers. His only major title was a single FA cup.)

I was 100% sure we would come out in a 4-3-3 today, at least to start the game and then maybe switch it up later.

This was Sam's only real mistake. No way old man Nicky and a partly match fit Barton were ever going to keep up with Diop, Muntari and Davis in midfield.

Really bad decision by the manager.

Not his only mistake

milner and n'zogbia on their unnatural wings was such a bad idea.

Why does he persist with this? Has it shown an ounce of promise? Anybody?

I was one of the few people who was displeased with the appointment of Sam. At the moment it seems justified. I always wanted and still want Luis Van Gaal.

Portsmouth aren't Chelsea. We are at home. We haven't played some excellent football. None of our new signings have looked as good as Elano. We are not 3rd.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments, that is a very poor example.

exactly i was thinking!

No, you weren't thinking.

CD, how do you know we won't string together 4 wins on the trot and play some good football along the way.  Citeh have been lucky, awful, and good this season.  It's a pretty fair comparison if you ask me.

I agree Sam should have the season but we shouldn't ignore the result.

That was in the league cup. After they had already beaten Arsenal. Y'know winning the Champions League and such kinda buys you more time to get things right in the eyes of the fans.

And this is where we have a flashback and remember that at the end of last season, any top successful manager wasnt going to touch us with a barge pole because the club was shit. Van Gaal was in charge of a good Alkmaar side who were doing well in Europe and going for the Dutch Championship and almost aguarnteed to qualify for europe again. Why on earth would he come here ?

Everyone was pleased because we saw SA as someone who would come and and sort out the club from top to bottom.

Its not showing any signs of happening so far but we all knew the job was huge so lets give him time.

There were worrying signs in the team selections for this and last week that Sam isn't backing his own judgement. This is what can happen when a manager is under pressure at a bigger club. Last week, it was dropping Smith. This week it's playing Zoggy and Milner. Those are choices that a lot of people were wanting him to make, and you wonder whether he's been influenced by all that. Wrong calls both.

He's got to stick to his beliefs and call it as he sees it.
