Ok he was shit at tracking back and occasionally looked like he couldn't give a flying toss, but when he attacked a team he did it verve and prupose, whipping in crosses, taking shots and generally being quite direct in his play. You must not have witnessed our left-sided play prior to the Show Pony's arrival ie. Glass, and of course Dalglish's occasional moonlighting on the left flank. Robert was a big source of goals from midfield plus he put in countless assists for Shearer. Bellamy is a massive reason Shearer got as much space as he did and Bellamy contributed lightening pace. The Frenchman was spotted having lunch with coach Charlie Woods at a restaurant close to the ground prior to kick-off and we have subsequently received unofficial confirmation that the ex-Montpellier, PSG, Portsmouth, Benfica and Levante man was at the game. Robert, who played under Woods with Newcastle during Sir Bobby Robson's time as manager at St James' Park, is currently available on a free transfer having recently left La Liga club Levante after a fall out. Earlier this month, the 32-year-old told the French press that clubs in England have expressed an interest in him, in addition to sides in France. The left-sided dead ball expert was subsequently linked with old club Newcastle, however, Sam Allardyce is reported to have denied any interest. Frenchman Robert, 32, has impressed while training with the Rams, and manager Paul Jewell has signed him up until the end of the season. He had a nice turn of pace, but he would never really beat a man or do anything outrageous with the ball apart from a top-class delivery/shot. These are two things he shouldn't have lost. Because we had no one pacey up front, the opposition's defence always tended to play a really high line, which meant Robert was never further up enough to whip in one of his trademark crosses. It's a shame he left in the circumstances he did though. One thing I have to say though, his corners were fucking shite. If people now think Milner/Emre's corners never got past the first man, they should have seen Robert's in the last season or so.
