Guest alijmitchell
Show Pony Did some great things but wasn't a great player. Hardly just a show pony now was he? Ok he was shit at tracking back and occasionally looked like he couldn't give a flying toss, but when he attacked a team he did it verve and prupose, whipping in crosses, taking shots and generally being quite direct in his play. Would never have said he was a show pony, skillful aye, but rarely just for the sake of it.
Thespence
laurent put ur ego in the closet and come back to newcastle for 10 grand a week! sicsfingeredmong
Show Pony Did some great things but wasn't a great player. A waste of mb's tbh. You must not have witnessed our left-sided play prior to the Show Pony's arrival ie. Glass, and of course Dalglish's occasional moonlighting on the left flank. Robert, the Show Pony you speak of = our most productive wideman since Waddle graced the turf here.
Guest Phil K
Bellamy had more praise from people on here for doing LESS, and less often than Robert.
Minhosa
Bellamy had more praise from people on here for doing LESS, and less often than Robert. Disagree, thought Bellamy was much the better player. Given the choice of having either back (at their peak) and I'd take Bellamy every time. Even though he was a gobby little shite. Leazes1986
You couldn't really say which one contributed more and was most important out of Robert and Bellamy. They were equally important. Robert was a big source of goals from midfield plus he put in countless assists for Shearer. Bellamy is a massive reason Shearer got as much space as he did and Bellamy contributed lightening pace. Both brilliant players and both are one of the biggest reasons we were so good attacking wise under SBR.
Guest optimistic nit
"Agreed, but Souness set him a challenge, raised the bar, which Robert responded to magnificently admittedly, then he let his mouth go again. How many times do you let that happen before you say enough is enough? Especially when you have a talented kid in the wings waiting while your Robert is approaching his final years as a player? I think Robert killed his own career here because leading up to his mouth going off, he was our star man and had Souness well and truly on his side." it depends on whether him gobbing off damages the club more than his performances on the pitch help it, which they certainly didn't. Thespence
TWTD understands that former Newcastle United winger Laurent Robert was indeed at Portman Road watching the Blues in action against Burnley on Saturday, as reported by a TWTD Message Boarder on Sunday. The Frenchman was spotted having lunch with coach Charlie Woods at a restaurant close to the ground prior to kick-off and we have subsequently received unofficial confirmation that the ex-Montpellier, PSG, Portsmouth, Benfica and Levante man was at the game. Robert, who played under Woods with Newcastle during Sir Bobby Robson's time as manager at St James' Park, is currently available on a free transfer having recently left La Liga club Levante after a fall out. Earlier this month, the 32-year-old told the French press that clubs in England have expressed an interest in him, in addition to sides in France. The left-sided dead ball expert was subsequently linked with old club Newcastle, however, Sam Allardyce is reported to have denied any interest. Former boss George Burley tried to bring Robert to Town from PSG in the summer of 2001, however, the £10 million fee and £30,000-a-week wages on offer at Newcastle saw the Blues drop out of the race. http://www.clubfanzine.com/ipswich_town/showNews.php?id=6865

Baggio
He's too old now, wish him luck at Derby though. What I'd do for a player of Robert's quality in the team at the moment.

Mr. Snrub
What I'd do for a player of Robert's quality in the team at the moment. Indeed. Just the kind of player we need right now. Unstoppable when he was firing on all cylinders and could change the game in a second of brilliance. Your sig gets funnier by the day.

NSG
Former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert will sign for Derby on Tuesday, subject to international clearance. Frenchman Robert, 32, has impressed while training with the Rams, and manager Paul Jewell has signed him up until the end of the season. "His ability is unquestioned and this could be a good piece of business for us," Jewell told the club's website. "I'm convinced we'll get the best out of him here and if we do, we'll have quite a player on our hands." The ex-Newcastle and Portsmouth winger gets the chance of a return to England after having his contract cancelled by Spanish side Levante. The Frenchman joined Newcastle for £10.5m in 2001 and made 139 Premier League appearances in four years on Tyneside. 606: DEBATE We are in desperate need of a player who gets stuck in robrea After a half-season loan at Portsmouth, he moved to Benfica in January 2006, before joining Levante later that year. Jewell added: "Laurent's key quality is what he can do with the ball - he can unlock the door, make things happen and produce a bit of magic. "He hasn't cost us anything in terms of a transfer fee and we had the chance to have a good look at him in training before making a decision." Argentine striker Emanuel Villa and Danny Mills have already signed for the Rams with Robbie Savage also set to join from Blackburn.
Colocho
He could be frustrating as hell sometimes, but one moment of magic and all that was quickly forgotten. Exactly. It will be interesting to see if he still has this magic, otherwise he is fucked.
Rich
I don't doubt that his shooting ability will still be there, which was his major asset. He had a nice turn of pace, but he would never really beat a man or do anything outrageous with the ball apart from a top-class delivery/shot. These are two things he shouldn't have lost. He also used to get into quality positions a lot too, much like Duff does when he plays. Ah, Robert, what a fucking guy.
Taylor Swift
I thought he started dropping too deep at the end of his stay here. Because we had no one pacey up front, the opposition's defence always tended to play a really high line, which meant Robert was never further up enough to whip in one of his trademark crosses. It's a shame he left in the circumstances he did though. One thing I have to say though, his corners were fucking shite. If people now think Milner/Emre's corners never got past the first man, they should have seen Robert's in the last season or so. Shiteness personified

I think he'd lost some of his pace when he left us actually, never seemed to be able to skip past a man like he used to.
