Alan Smith

I can't really think of a more unpopular player in recent memory than Smith. Even Luque, Boumsong, Dyer, Bowyer et al had people who defended them. Nobody likes Alan Smith.

They had an ounce of ability, and in the case of Luque & Boumsong had been a success before they joined so there was always the hope they could turn it around here. Smith on the otherhand, has been average all his career, 80% knew when he signed he was a poor player, and has done naff all to prove us wrong.

Even still you'd think there'd be one person who would stick up for him but I've obviously missed that if it's happened.

Bowyer played well for us in 04-05, in fact he was arguably our best player that season after Bellas (who was sold in Jan)

Dyer was on fire in his first 3 seasons for us. And had his moments after that, despite basically being an injury-prone waster

Luque was highly rated in spain, looked like Pele's brother in youtube clips and the general concensus was that he was a CF being played out of position

Boumsong was good at the Teddy Bears and looked very capable in his first half season. Even captaining us against Fulham in late 04-05

Smith was always an average player and now looks total dogshite. No hint of ability, a brain or pace. The fact that he seemed to have total immunity from being dropped added to the hatred

Most of them used him playing in midfield as their excuse for his poor performances, I think now he's had a run up front they've just accepted he's shite.

I'm hoping his plan all along has been to be utter shit all season just to make his inevitable goal against the mackems all the more funny.

And then hopefully run out the ground celebrating, never to be seen again.

Yeah he did, he got in the way of Martins, fouled Campbell and still fell over, then in the dying minutes we were on the break, and Smith is second furthest forward, and he strolls about the centre circle. Feel harsh on the kid, but f****** hell. Still can't believe we signed him, everyone wanted a creative midfielder to replace Dyer, and we get this c***.

 I can imagine. Like when he came on against Fulham, and i mentioned it in the post-match thread aswell, he came on and had a near-post header from a corner. Headed it away from goal, literally away, as in back out of the penalty area.

The only purpose the man has is if it's 85 minutes, we're hanging onto a lead, our midfield are knackered and our defense is a bit shaky - and we sit him infront of the backline as the clock runs down, just to hassle em up a bit and add a bit of energy. Even then it's risky, with fouls in and around the box.

He genuinely is a worse signing than the likes of Luque, Boumsong and Marcelino. That's not even an exaggeration. Dire footballer.

He is worse than then because he has had a worse impact, with those players they were just not good enough, or never played. Boumsong played but he was just abit shaky, sometimes had good games in Boumsong we needed a solid defender, and sadly he couldn't do it consistently, but with Smith he has played 90% of the games this season, and has been the catalyst in ruining the full team as he has been a shocking replacement for Dyer.

Are you thinking of the right season there? He was pretty good in 05/06 when Roeder seemed to get the best out of him as an attacking centre-mid, arriving late and suchlike. I thought he was absolute wank in 04/05, when Souness kept picking him, for some Godforsaken reason.

Bowyer's one of them weird players that has some sort of void in my memory, sorta thing. He was so highly rated at one point that i can't really believe he played for us. Looking back now, he could have been so much better.

Anyhow, yeah. Smith. God - what a fucking wank player.

he was very good at the back end of 05-06 when he partnered Emre in CM and we eventually finished 7th but no, i'm talking 04-05, the dickhead's first season in charge

he was comfortably our highest scoring midfielder that season, i thought he looked dynamic, good in the tackle and always up for it.

of course the fact that he twated Dyer is probably reason enough  O0

Baggio you might laugh, but that is exactly what he did, if he had have ran when Owen had the ball we could have played easier balls to break Pompy down, rather than Owen going for a 30 yard ball, we might have scored.

Fuck that actually this is Alan Smith, he would have controlled the ball, fouled Kanu who wasn't even on the pitch, got booked for his 10th of the season, and got suspended for his next game, which is argubly better than 2 points.

sack the board for buying him ?

Here we go again. Obviously Baggio and Mick will have started this board argument again though :jesuswept:

no, I'm just wondering what the difference is. You can answer if you like

Well, the guy who bought Smith is history, the guy who appointed the guy who bought Smith is history, and hopefully soon Smith will join them on the underachieving ash-heap of times gone by.

To be fair if some of our more talented players put in the graft Smith does, they'd improve immeasurably. The problem for Smith is that effort is all he has to offer, and that's not enough in the Premier League.

And the funny thing is, compared to Luque, Bowyer, et al, his attitude has been top-notch, commitment never in doubt, and he has genuinely come across as someone rather endearing (maybe it's his hair and passion).

The thing is... he's shit. Even Stephen Glass did more for this club.

As I've said before, I don't think he does put much more effort in than average. Won't chase lost causes or turn up in his own area to make a saving tackle, just runs round in a small area of the pitch kicking people which makes it look like he is grafting. The way he'll stand 20-30 yards behind play scratching his arse when a wide player is looking for an option in and around the box is disgraceful at times.

Doesn't put in a fraction of the effort of Milner imo.

Fair enough, you've seen more of him than me anyway. :nods:

Agreed, he looks as if he does more work than he does in reality, sometimes the ball is within 5 metres of him and play just seems to pass him by.
