To be honest, the worst thing about Desailly is the commitment issue - will he hang around for long, and will he work with our academy.

???

Not another favourite?

Frenchmen fit the bill after Newcastle put plans on table

George Caulkin

Chris Mort, the Newcastle United chairman, has given a realistic appraisal of his search for a new manager, conceding that a club who have become synonymous with under-achievement may not appeal to stellar names. While Didier Deschamps and Gérard Houllier are among those to have been contacted by Newcastle, supporters should not expect a grand unveiling of José Mourinho.

The odds on Deschamps succeeding Sam Allardyce plunged last night, with the former Chelsea player – who led Juventus to promotion to Serie A last season – becoming the bookmakers’ favourite to take charge at St James’ Park. He has already been in one round of talks with Newcastle and another is planned, but other candidates are also being interviewed.

Mort is eager to reclaim control of a process that lost impetus after Harry Redknapp’s decision last weekend to remain at Portsmouth. Part of that task entails restricting the expectations of supporters to a viable level. “We are not necessarily going to interest a manger who is already at a team playing Champions League football or whose only ambition is to manage a top team in, say, Spain or Italy,” he said.

Mort was again away from his desk yesterday, as he continued the task of sifting through the shortlist for a vacancy created by Allardyce’s departure last week. Newcastle, who wish to avoid a repeat of Redknapp’s public snub, are speaking to managers and coaches not at present employed by other clubs, which explains the lack of an approach to Mark Hughes, the Blackburn Rovers manager.

Nigel Pearson, the caretaker manager – whose side face an FA Cup replay at home to Stoke City tonight – has called for a decision to be made “as soon as possible”, but no timescale has been given and Mort is determined not to rush an appointment.

“The most important thing now is to get the decision right – and lay solid foundations for the future,” he said. “That is why we will take whatever time is necessary.”

Houllier, the former Liverpool manager, has been involved with the French Football Federation since leaving Lyons last year. Last night, the governing body insisted that the 60-year-old had offered assurances that he would not be moving to Tyneside. “Gérard’s word is enough for me,” Jean-Pierre Escalettes, the federation president, said. “I talked to Gérard by telephone and he works for us.”

Pressed on his return from a holiday in Barbados to comment on the situation at his home-town club, Alan Shearer, Newcastle’s record goal-scorer, expressed an interest in taking a managerial role there “one day”. However, for Mort and Mike Ashley, the club’s billionaire owner – who has returned from a business trip to the Far East – Shearer’s inexperience disqualifies him.

Counting against Deschamps is his less-than-immaculate grasp of English, which is another of Mort’s criteria. “The manager will have to be someone who is able to speak English,” the chairman said. Mort also spoke of the need to reinvigorate the club’s academy, for Newcastle’s team to combine “style with winning” and for a candidate capable of coping with heightened expectations. Martin Jol, the former Tottenham Hotspur manager, is also on the shortlist.

Pearson admitted that the “integrity” of Newcastle’s players has been questioned after their disappointing form this season and their 6-0 defeat at Old Trafford last Saturday, but he remains disheartened by Allardyce’s departure. “There have been a lot of very important foundations laid at this club in the last few months, so this is very difficult,” he said. “At some point, the club has to have stability.”

Pearson revealed that Joey Barton, the troubled midfield player, has been training with Newcastle this week. The England international is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court today on charges of assault and affray and has been receiving treatment at the Sporting Chance Clinic, in Hampshire, as part of his bail conditions. He is not available to play tonight.

All the suspense and speculation is over baked. It's like a lion playing with a gazelle really. Just get Mourinho and forget the also rans and the "He'll do because XYZ and I'm a freezing Mong in front of a Sky camera." Otherwise we're in the same position 6 months from now.

Continental attacking football? Hell, the new manager needs to first instill some basic defending skills ffs. While also geting people on the field who know what it is to wear the shirt. I just can't see why this is so hard and why so many have failed with token signings who flop and a team that isn't.

Does Ashley own any media companies profiting off selling cheap tabloid crap? That's the only real reason for the delay. Anything else is time wasting and second best. Get SBR some vitamins, have him broker the deal and  pay Mourinho and whomever else what they want to get him in. It's NOT above our station, he'll have backing to the hilt and the supporters will embrace virtually anything that he does. Simple. O0
