Another Record Exclusive Keegan Wants To Make United Midfield Star His First Signing

KEVIN KEEGAN has targeted Barry Robson to be part of his s30m Newcastle revolution.

The new Toon boss is a huge admirer of the Dundee United playmaker and is ready to launch a sensational bid.

Record Sport understands the Geordie club have been alerted by Keegan to the Scotland midfielder's availability and are ready to make a bid to take him south. Celtic are expected to make an offer for Robson but Keegan is ready to up the ante to make him his first signing.

After spending the past three years north of the border, Keegan reckons Robson can make an impact in the Premiership. Speculation about the Tannadice skipper has grown in recent weeks but Keegan's return to Tyneside has brought Robson into the frame for his rebuilding plan.

A source close to the player said: "Barry believes he can play at the highest level and there is a lot of interest in him. There is no definite contact but his ambition is to prove himself among the best.

"He'll have to weigh up his options over the next couple of days but he has never hidden his intention of being able to cut it at the highest level.

Newcastle have handed Keegan a megabucks budget in a bid to bring success to St James' Park and Robson would be an astonishing addition to a squad the former England manager is determined will be a formidable force.

Keegan was officially unveiled as manager only yesterday but was immediately linked with David Beckham and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe.

United chairman Eddie Thompson is determined to pull as much as he can for Robson and it is believed a bid of s1.5m would lure him south

Hang on a second. If Keegan has hardly touched the football world over the last 3 years, how come the Record knows he is a HUGE admirer or him

Because both the Daily Record and Keegan were based in Glasgow until last week...

Barry Robson is a very good player in the SPL; excellent set piece taker and his all-round delivery is decent all round. My club (Aberdeen) tried to sign him before he went to Dundee United and it's taken him quite a few seasons to blossom into the player he now is. I would be very, very surprised if we were to make an approach for him however and I think he is some way off the level which we should be aiming for. He could easily do a job for Celtic playing against the likes of Gretna and St. Mirren every week, but I wouldn't exactly be over the moon if this is the standard of player we're looking to attract.

Won't sign, has no Prem experience and that is what KK wants.

This Premier League experience bit has turned into a bit of a misquoted myth.

Keegan is looking for players who can come into the League and do a job straight away. Therefore, they dont have to have experience, just the attributes that makes Keegan believe that the player he brings in can have an immediate effect on the team.

King Kev corrected himself the other day regarding not having watched a game since he left Man City. He said that he hasn't watched a game live meaning he hasn't been to a game. Initially when he made his statement everyone assumed he meant he hadn't watched any games on TV either.
