Arsène Wenger is closing in on Marseille's attacking midfielder Samir Nasri as he looks to strengthen his Arsenal squad for next season.

Nasri, a France international who has been named in Raymond Domenech's provisional 30-man squad for the European Championship next month, is most comfortable in a central position. He can play on either flank and would seem to be equipped to fill the role of Alexander Hleb who, according to his agent, is determined to leave the club this summer.

Nasri, 20, signed a four-year deal at Marseille this month but it contains a buy-out clause of €17m (£13.5m) and the Arsenal manager is preparing to pay it. Talks have been held with his representatives and Nasri indicated on Saturday, after scoring in Marseille's 4-3 win over Strasbourg which secured qualification for the Champions League, that he is ready to bid farewell. "It is very important [to score] because it is perhaps my last match at the Stade Vélodrome," he said.

Nasri is an instinctive and skilful touch player who has pace, vision and a good temperament. He may well replace a similar player in Hleb, who has had his head turned by the interest of Internazionale. They have been preoccupied by the chase for the scudetto but after securing it last Sunday, Hleb can resume talks.

Wenger has had to rethink plans to make only the finest of tuning to his squad over the summer. He has already lost Mathieu Flamini, a midfielder, on a Bosman free to Milan and there are doubts over Gilberto Silva, who has only a year remaining on his deal.

The ageing goalkeeper Jens Lehmann may also sign for the German side Stuttgart after meeting with club officials yesterday. The club who finished sixth in the Bundesliga are thought to be offering Lehmann a one-year contract with an option for a second year. The 38-year-old discussed a move before flying to Mallorca with the Germany squad to begin their Euro 2008 preparations.

Stuttgart require a keeper after Raphael Schafer, signed from Nurnberg last year, failed to live up to expectations. However the general manager, Horst Heldt, said they will not be held to ransom by Lehmann. "If he wants to earn as much as he did at Arsenal, then we have no chance."

Liverpool have made their first transfer move of the summer, swooping for Borussia Dortmund's Philipp Degen on a free transfer.

The Switzerland international defender will move to Anfield on 1 July when his current deal with the German club ends.

The 25-year-old former Basel player will compete with Alvaro Arbeloa and Steve Finnan for the right-back berth.

"His strength is going forward," Anfield manager Rafael Benitez told Liverpool's website.

"He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality.

"He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top-level football."

Degen - whose twin brother David plays for Basel - has made 26 appearances for Switzerland since making his international debut in 2005.

He spent three seasons at Dortmund, making 70 appearances before opting to move to Anfield.

"When I received the offer from Liverpool, there was no doubt I would accept it," said Degen.

"They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am looking forward to the challenge of establishing myself there and playing in the best league there is."

Arsenal have been in contact with Marseille midfielder Samir Nasri with a view to signing the France international, BBC Sport understands.

The 20-year-old is believed to have a £13.5m buy-out clause in his contract, but it is not known whether Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has agreed a fee.

Nasri, who said he may have played his final game for the club, is renowned for his pace and dribbling skills.

He was named in France's provisional 30-man squad for Euro 2008 on Sunday.

Nasri joined Marseille as a nine-year-old and made his league debut during the 2004-2005 season.

Last season, Nasri, who can play on either wing, won the French first division's young player of the year crown and was voted Marseille's player of the year by fans.

This campaign he scored six goals in 30 games for the French outfit with the final strike in his tally coming in the 4-3 win over Strasbourg last weekend that helped secure Marseille's berth in next season's Champions League

Nasri had appeared at various youth international levels for France before winning the first of seven senior caps in 2007.

Manchester United have made bids for French starlets Jeremy Helen and Darnel Situ.

15-year-old Helen is one of the most sought after teenagers in Europe and United look to have beaten Internazionale, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Newcastle and Everton to a deal.

Helen, a left-back, is currently with Rennes, who United have now opened talks with about a deal as he has a two-year agreement with the French side.

"The player wants to go to Manchester United," admitted Rennes general manger Pierre Dreossi.

"And they have made us an offer.

"We will gather our thoughts and see whether we will consider it or not, but we will defend our interests."

United have already made contact with the family of the Clairefontaine graduate and his mother has confirmed her son is set for Manchester after talks with Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Nothing is settled so far," she told L'Equipe.

"My son has signed a pre-contract with Rennes and we called for a specialist to look at it. Jeremy is a stable boy and I cannot see any difference between living in Rennes or Manchester if you have a good entourage.

"I will spend several months and years beside him if needed and my son and I have talked with Alex Ferguson."

Money not an issue

She insists that the move is not financially motivated and insists United offer him the best chance of progressing in his career.

"Internazionale, Newcastle, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Everton also contacted him. Money will not make his choice," she said.

"To him, Manchester offers the best career path."

Helen is currently a French Under 16 international and he could very well be joined at Old Trafford by compatriot Darnel Situ.

Situ - captain of the French Under 16s - is another player United have talked to and now they are closing on the capture of both.

Situ is currently attached to Lens, but like with Rennes, they look set to lose one of their prized assets.

.......its nice to see Vitere doing his job well. One day we'll get lucky mate

Palermo have confirmed that Amauri is joining Juventus. Very good signing. They will become a major force in Europe next season..

Will need a lot more than one good signing to get up to their past standards.

No surprise there then.

I'm somewhat surprised. Why go there to be a back-up player for Woodgate & King?

Sure they are the most injury prone CB-pair in Europe, but I would have thought that Dunne would rather fancy being a starter here instead.

Would have thought Dunne would be a starter at Spurs most of the time tbh.  If Spurs get a dozen starts out of Ledders next season I think they'll be doing well.

You not a spurs fan anymore?

Not since they rushed me for £1150 for my ST!!

Alot of money for a Sanitory towel tbh.

Of course, but in Trezeguet, Chiellini, Buffon, Andrade and the resurgence of Sissoko they have a pretty decent group of players to start off with. Will be interesting to see Sebastian Giovinco there next season, he's been superb for Empoli this year.

Not forgetting Lord Olof of Mellberg (who is actually on a downward curve, but what a man)

Gee, imagine how great they'd be if they had managed to hold on to Boumsong!

Supposedly Moyes has around £20m-ish before any player sales

Talk of selling Johnson and buying Owen or Jo for £18m  :kasper: Anichebe is wanted by other clubs too.

20 million wont be enough if Moyes wants to be in the top 4

I agree but I would think he could easily raise a further £12m or so through sales.

Johnson - £7m

Valente - £1m

Anichebe - £4m

That said, they haven't got the biggest of squads to start with.
