Could Keegan's Outburst .....

Owen has played well enough recently to think he should demand a decent wad of cash.

Owen has also played infrequently enough for NUFC to think he probably shouldn't be given the wad of cash he is asking for.

It's definitely not going to be smooth sailing these negotiations. I'm also more inclined to believe preliminary negotiations have started too.

When a player says they haven't approached him yet that probably means that they haven't offered what he is hoping for I would imagine.

So KK saying they haven't entered negotiations means what then?

I only remember Keegan saying  that he wanted Owen to stay. Did Keegan actually say Owen and Newcastle haven't started talking yet?

Any evidence of that?

I know this will annoy some, but I could see a situation where things were so far apart in the initial discussions that it had to be put on the backburner till the end of the season? So although they could all say "we haven't started talking" there could still be a situation.

Look, I just think it would be very difficult to determine what to pay Owen at the moment. We clearly didn't get value for money the first time around due to his injuries and in all honestly his first contract was a disaster for us. He was supposed to help fire us into Europe so the investment would be worthwhile, but it didn't happen.

We really can't guarantee he will stay fit from now on, and in fact, judging from his history he will likely be injured again before long. If we gave him a new contract and he did get seriously injured yet again how would we all feel about it? Honestly?

I really don't know what the club should do here. It is a very tough call in my opinion.

i'm not gonna dispute any of that, i guess it comes down to the quality of player we can get to the club if we decide not to renew.

just watched the interview again.  He says the "big 4" have spent money we don't have.  Which, in fairness we don't.  Since he arrived, Abramovich has spent hundreds of millions, and its taken time to assemble that squad.  KK implied by not having the money, we don't have hundreds of millions which I don't think we do.  I don't think he's denying we could get a few £10-15m players (totalling about £40-50m), more that we can't get 8 or 9 £15-20m players as Chelsea have accumulated over the seasons in one summer.

I have to say I agree with Jim Smith, in that its more Keegan saying to the board, "If you want to compete, you're going to have to spend".

Mr Mole was presented with his new home today, built by the good folk at Newcastle Online.

Commenting upon seeing the luxury abode, Mr Mole said, 'I can't believe they've managed to make a mountain out of my old place!!'.

I think there's a problem with Owen from the business point of view. The big four don't want him, and no-one else will match his current wages. Any businessman is then going to ask - why should we continue to pay him more than the going rate? On the other hand, offering him a pay cut is a bit of an insult.

Personally, I'd let him see out his contract, and then he can join whoever's offering him the most.

Keegan asked Ashley 6 weeks ago to sort Owen's contract out. They haven't approached him yet and will be doing it once the season is over.

By all accounts Owen wants to sign.

"That's why I said eight weeks ago we should tie him up. If we don't, and we lose him, then what can I say?

"It shouldn't happen and it probably won't happen. But it could. He's not knocking the door down saying what's happening and I'm not pushing things either.

Sorry, 8. I'll find the quote from Mort regarding talking to Owen in summer in a bit.

Have everything to with the fact that Owens contract negotiations are not going as well as he expected or hoped.

Apparently negotiations opened 6 weeks ago and maybe Keegan is trying to bring Ashley closer to Owens demands.

What I herd/read was nowt had happened since Keegan mentioned it 6 weeks ago. But in that time we have brought in some fella from Newcastle racecourse who doesn't have job role is just going to dive into all sorts of business stuff & we have appointed a chap with funny glasses who used to be involved in the casino game as deputy chairman but sort out captains contract well that is on the back burner.

What is the problem?

Owen has a contract over the next season and we are still playing games. It is better and everyone else can focus on that, and in the summer (he does´t even play in the summer) take the contract talk.

Think KK is a little annoying about all his talk in the media about Owen and the transfer money.

Is it The Times where Owen used to have/has a column?

Good news if true, anyway.

Yep.  Think he's signed to the News of the world now.  Same company though.

nobody see the irony in this............madrid to us.......times to the news of the world ?
