I hope Arhavin inspires Russia tonight, I had a £20 each way bet at 28/1 before the tournament started.

My mate at work had Pavluchenko top scorer and Russia to win the competition. Stands to win £3k if it comes off.

Surely the Zenit board were also aware of the possible value hike the EC would give their player, though?

Exactly. Same with Arda - there's no way a player like that would move pre-tournament when a good tournament would see their stock rise to such an extent that bigger and richer clubs would be in for them, and even a poor showing would barely see their value depreciate.

If the big was bid, as it was for Modric, they'd have sold him - the benefit of a big price regardless of a shit tournament would have outweighed any relatively small increment in the price if he had a good tournament.

Of course, we'd not have made the big bid unless we were sure they were potential top class, hence the only option was to wait and see, hoping that they have decent tournaments whilst showing glimpses of potential, rather than being the top stars in the tournament that they did turn out to be.

We should now just move on and look at the potentially top players who didnt get a chance to perform in the Euros. Huntelaar for example - if we bite the bullet and offer big now, Ajax have no reason to hang onto him in the hope that a big CL club will come in with a marginally bigger offer, and it seems like hes off the radar due to the top sides scrambling for the Arshavins etc.

doubt his price would drop due to a shit tournament and youtalk as if the player (and his agent) have no say in it.

Barcelona say they have been monitoring Arshavin since earlier this year.

"Our interest isn't sudden since we have been following him with discretion for a few months now," said Soriano, who added that the Spanish giants had first noticed him in April when he played against German side Bayer Leverkusen in the Uefa Cup.

What a liar. Clearly we were the only club to have been interested pre-Euro 2008.  :mystery:

The lads aged 27 and he's at the peak of his career, he's hardly going to take a step down down to the likes of ourselves or Everton now is he...

A step down?  Are you trying to do a maetihs or what?..

If Ronaldo had put in the performance Arshavin has tonight he'd have been called a bottler and all sorts.

good point, that.

Yes and no. Arshavin has been great for a week. Ronaldo is supposed to have been great for two years.

Having only skimmed past the last few posts, are people really calling him a big-game bottler?

No, the opposite. He's still a quality player regardless of tonight's no-show.

Massively over-hyped, by people on here and the media

The thought of buying a 27-28 year old who needs to adapt to a new league, who relies on his pace could be a big white elephant. Duff II.

People not think that maybe Barcelona made their approach in the run up to a Russia v Spain semi final of a major tournament in an attempt to get him to choke? Look at the quotes from him, he's always dreamed of playing for Barca, club he supported as a boy, never thought he'd ever realistically stand a chance of playing for them. Then just takes one phone call and a Zenit statement to make him think that the next game he's playing in is not only the biggest game of his international career as there is a euro championship final place at stake, but also his big chance to make his dream come true in a game the whole of Spain and, more importantly, Barcelona will be watching? That's a fuckload of pressure for someone who isn't used to being in the spotlight and could go a long way towards explaining last night. If someone has voiced this opinion earlier on, apologies, i didn't flick back through...

For what it's worth i'd still take him in a heartbeat, class player. Amazing to see people slating him after one bad game, still can't work out if that's sarcasm or not? Anyone who has watched him play for Zenit in the UEFA cup this year (not going to claim to have seen any russian domestic games, but have seen a lot of the UEFA cup games) will know that he'd be an exciting signing. Yes, he may not work, but that's a gamble we're going to have to take whoever we sign. The post above about Duff sums some of the short-sightedness up well, to describe Arshavin as Duff mk II when you have said 'a 27-28 year old who needs to adapt to a new league' - pretty sure Duff was about as proven a premier league player as you can get. Pretty sure Carr, Babayaro, Butt, Parker and many more had proved themselves at other clubs prior to joining us, it didn't exactly guarantee they were resounding successes.
