Under-fire Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is facing further difficulties at St James' Park after it was revealed that his assistant Arthur Cox has left the club.

One of the first things Keegan did upon returning to Tyneside in January was appoint Cox, his long-time mentor and a former Newcastle manager, in a key backroom role. However, it emerged yesterday that Cox has departed, with no details revealed as to the reason why.

The news comes at the end of a difficult week for Keegan, who has clashed with owner Mike Ashley over the proposed sale of striker Alan Smith to Everton and is facing an injury crisis on the eve of the new Premier League campaign.

Cox, 68, had been a long-time friend and confidante to Keegan, and his departure is likely to create a further strain on the Magpies boss.

Their working relationship began when, as Newcastle manager, Cox signed Keegan from Southampton in 1982, and the pair led the club to promotion to the top flight two years later.

Cox then spent nine years in charge at Derby County, before returning to St James' Park, this time to work under Keegan as a coach.

The two teamed up at Fulham in 1998, before Keegan took over as England national team boss a year later. Keegan wanted to appoint Cox as England's assistant manager, but the FA would not allow it because he was over 60, so Cox was given a coaching position instead.

Cox resigned in October 2000, along with fellow coach Peter Beardsley, following the departure of Keegan - who went on to criticise the FA for denying him the right to hand Cox the assistant manager's role due to his age, after they allowed his successor Sven-Goran Eriksson to appoint 64-year-old Tord Grip as his number two.

The pair linked up again in 2001 at Manchester City, where Cox was promoted from chief scout to assistant manager in April 2002.

Cox retired from football in 2004, but was persuaded to return to the game earlier this year by Keegan when he enjoyed a hero's homecoming at St James' Park.

He was always going to leave wasn't he? Never a permanent member of staff as such.

Was gonna say the same - Sure I read that Cox return was just till Keegan 'found his feet again'.

Again, much like Mort's departure - the media make it out to be some major falling out, when in reality it is something that was agreed from day one.

Getting tedious, the negative spin they put to everything.

On a side note, the FA not allowing Cox to be made Asst. Manager because of his age. How stupid is that, did they think at sixty he lost all his experience and abilities?

Just goes to show, it doesn't matter if we actually run the club well, the media will have shit to spout about it. Maybe Freddy wasn't that bad after all?!

Is it not possible that Keegan brought in Cox as a trusted side-kick while he got the house in order for the first few months and now that we've started to settle down abit Cox has just moved on?

NoNo obviously Cox hates Ashley and can't bare to work for him.

It never used to be this bad.  Now it seems that every newcastle related story has a negative twist.

I know Newcastle fans are bad at times but is it actually possible to be "under fire" before a ball has been kicked?

Perhaps this "under fire" comment has got something to do with Keegan having decided to sign a couple of Georgian strikers from South Ossetia?
