Newcastle's own web archives prove Kevin Keegan is right - FACT!

By Simon Bird 8/09/2008

Kevin Keegan will use evidence from Newcastle's own club publications to back up his £8m claim for constructive dismissal.

Newcastle chiefs set about trashing Keegan at the weekend with briefings aimed at tarnishing his reputation - a move that will trigger more revulsion from fans.

Owner Mike Ashley and his directors claimed Keegan had no responsibility over new signings.

But Keegan yesterday insisted: "When I joined Newcastle it was made clear to me I would have the final say on player movement."

And Mirror Sport has built up a strong case to prove the club's statement is misleading - using their own website archive.

Fact: Ashley told Newcastle's official magazine last month: "If the deal is right - that means the right player who Kevin wants - we will do the deal. Kevin is very particular on who he wants."

Fact: Wise told the club website on February 1: "He (Keegan) will say yes or no. He has the final word. No-one else. I am not going to do things like bring players in behind his back."

Fact: Later that day, in a piece billed as an exclusive with the club's TV station, Wise added: "A lot of people have got a little mixed up with the reason I'm here and we need to straighten that out quite quickly. I'm not here to be involved in the first team."

Fact: On January 29 then chairman Chris Mort stated: "Kevin will be responsible for ALL matters related to the first team."

Fact: Keegan, proving he is being consistent in claiming he was in charge of transfers from day one, said on April 24: "If they bring players in who are not my players I wouldn't be managing this club.

Ashley and Executive Director Dennis Wise are in the ludicrous position of having to claim they were misquoted by their own club officials to wriggle out of the row that led to Keegan's walk-out.

The club is now left with little choice but to appoint a friend of Wise as their new boss who will take the title of 'coach'.

That has led to Wise's former Chelsea team-mates Gus Poyet and the charismatic Gianfranco Zola becoming front-runners for the St James's Park job, along with Didier Deschamps and Spaniard Jose Camacho.

One candidate, Real Zaragoza boss Marcelino Toral, has ruled himself out of the running.

He said: "It doesn't matter what the team is, or how much money they have, no club will take me away from Zaragoza. I have made a commitment."

Is it even a legit survey or has it been created by a mackem? The consecutive "Are Sunderland now a better managed club than Newcastle?" and "Are Newcastle a laughing stock?" questions seemed a bit fishy...

Edit: Well it is actually linked from the Journal website, but seems a bit amateurish...

Quite probably. There is a lot of that going on in the local and national media at the moment.

Now I've read it, it reads like a Sky Sports fan interview totally lob sided and looking for the obvious answer. It's bad enough having national TV insulting our intelligence but when a local newspaper starts doing the same................................

The press are often quoted as being anti Newcastle.  Maybe they are, maybe they are this time just perpetuating a story for their own benefit, but at least the Mirror has this time come up with a reasoned argument backed up with evidence for saying that KK has been hard done by.

you both echo my feelings on this - the situation changed, obviously very significantly

from keegans side we know what the change was, it's obvious, but the real question is why did the club change from giving him final say to taking everything out of his hands?

breakdowns in relationships are always 2 sided and i think a lot of people are forgetting that - one thing that strikes home with me is that the club are telling anyone who'll listen about KK's targets being unrealistic...personally i see this as the crux of the whole matter and the reason for the breakdown, as patently neither side was willing to give

 top post, especially the (bit I put in) bold

Yes indeed, a decision was made to take transfer responsibility off Keegan. Well, more than one decision, because it seems to me the acquisition (and disposal) process evolved throughout the summer, culminating in the farcical deadline day.

But for me the questions are who made the decision to... relieve Keegan of his transfer duties, and why did they come to that decision.

Those are important question, but not more so than: Why did they decide to lie about it?

To be honest - my view of the new set  is starting to change a little bit - not because i believe its x's fault of y's fault but i think they have done the cardinal sin and forced a manager out who was doing well for this club in particular.

Having being witness to so many poor appointments and therefore many shitty seasons with no hope, i can honestly say that from the outset this set up looked excellent - and to a degree i still do, however, the club cant be excused from a basic lack of communication and a bit of foresight, i dont believe the main issue here is x undermining y or y  falling out with z or whatever, i feel that the suitabliltiy of the targets lead the club to have to undrmine Keegan, i think they may of thought it could of been a PR disaster if it was leaked that they had to tell him to change his list having spoken openily about him having free reign.

They put themselves in between a rock and hard place.

By creating 2 seperate lists the club put a definitive fracture in one of the most volatile and sensitive areas of football club management, it was pointed out at the time that this was a very dangerous policy and and it appears that it became too dangerous - and for this lack of (in my opinioon) lackof foresight the club should really be lambasted for this. I can see 2 or 3 ways in which this could of been sorted or at least helped:

The club could of communicated the issue better with Keegan and told him the lists werent suitable, risked the short term aggro for the long term gain.

The club could of made Keegan create his list more closely with Wise etc.

The club could of given the 2 people 2 seperate budgets, Keegan witha larger one obviously. (However still doent guratuee that Keegans targets would be suitable)

EDIT: yep ya right,

When the backroom team clears out, it usually means a new one is coming in to replace them. Hopefully we've sorted out a new manager so we can get back to the fucking football

Unless they've walked.

even so. they are the closest people to the players. i doubt they would walk and leave them hanging, unless they knew others are coming in. my opinion of course. also, i am sure with their contracts they would have to give some sort of notice before quitting.

If Lee Ryder at the Chronicle is right (and this is fairly likely for once as he and his rag are close to the likes of McDermott and Sadler) then this was the case:

The pair were told not to report to the training ground as usual and to make their way to St James’s Park where they were told about their futures.

So they've been sacked off, they haven't walked.

In the words of Worms: "Incoming"?

Not necessarily they may simply want to get rid of people they see as Keegan supporters from the "inside" of the club, in order to stop any "damaging" leaks. Someone's been going to the press with "pro-Keegan" inside info for a while now, maybe they think it was Terry Mac?

Like they are going to stop these people talking by sacking them..

Well no, probably the opposite, but I'm guessing they might prefer not to be paying their wages whilst they do, also it could put an end to the mysterious club insider stories for a while.

I'm just commenting on their possible reasoning for doing it, not whether it's right or wrong, or will be successful or not.
