Newcastle are above Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League and they're starting to remind me of the time Everton finished in a Champions League spot.

But I just have a funny feeling they might lose on Sunday.

They've been scoring the first goal and riding their luck in some games. I don't know how they managed to beat Blackburn, that's a football match they should never have won, but they defended very well, they restricted the other team and Tim Krul didn't have to make many saves, apart from the penalty.

Everyone will now turn up and expect them to beat Villa at home, but I don't think Newcastle are playing great football and I don't see it happening.

Demba Ba could be involved again, but he'll have lost a lot of pride at the Africa Cup of Nations. His country, Senegal, finished bottom of their group without winning a game and I wouldn't be surprised if that knocks him a little bit.

Also, Aston Villa are good on the counter-attack as we saw against Arsenal last week. They also played very well in the second half against QPR and I just think they will be a threat to Newcastle.

I haven't been impressed with them this season, but they've been decent in the last couple of games. If they'd got through the first 10 minutes of the second half at Arsenal without conceding a goal then I think they'd have won the game. They might even have picked Arsenal off again. If they play like that against Newcastle they won't be too far away.

Charles N'Zogbia produced his best performance in an Aston Villa shirt in midweek and he always seems to do well against Newcastle, as we saw in his Wigan days. Maybe that will be the case again.

I don't know why, but I just have a feeling this game won't go the way everyone's expecting.

You'll never guess what Merson reckons is going to happen...

Well on the one hand he thinks Villa are a huge club but then him predicting them to win would be consistent and logical with his own opinion... so it could go either way.

I don't know how he "cannot see [us beating Villa]", like

We might not, especialy with Cabaye and Tiote out we are far from certain to pick up points here, but that is just fucking daft. We're 5th because we've been beating teams like Villa all season, not because we 'don't play great football', you muppet.

What an idiot.

When Villa won the european cup it was a lot easier to win, then they got relegated the next season to gates of 14000.

Tedious debate anyway but Merson is a tit.

Classic 'you have won nowt drivel' ... Size is not determined by sucess. It corrolates but it is not definitive. That would be who is the most succesful club.

Spot on, it does my head in when people use historical success as an argument for why a club is big ect. A club like Liverpool can, their historical success is so good (sorry) that it still has a big effect on players looking at the club today "Most successful club in England" is a pretty big tag.

No player will join Villa because of their success, and it has no/very little impact on their current finances/gate reciepts/stadium size/pulling power/global support etc, which are the real things that make a club 'big'.

Lawro writing in the mirror

Alan Pardew will not finish in the top six, let alone in the Champions League places.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been tripping over themselves, while Newcastle have been riding the crest of a wave.

Pardew deserves great credit for getting Newcastle into the position they are now and it has been a terrific season for them – especially having started the campaign with so many doubts.

The Magpies have a great spirit, Pardew has built on that and got them playing the right way; they’re competitive and very good when they have and haven’t got the ball.

Demba Ba has been the signing of the season, scoring goals, coming in on a free and is strong, powerful and a brilliant deal.

Papiss Cisse has been brought in to strengthen the forward line and he and Ba are reforming their international partnership for Senegal at club level.

Yohan Cabaye is also a great discovery, tapping into the superb scouting knowledge of Graham Carr, who has been invaluable to the club. Fabricio Coloccini also looks excellent and has been transformed by Pardew.

They have also ridden their luck on occasion. The game at QPR springs to mind and Newcastle were also fortunate at Ewood Park in midweek, as Blackburn should have got at least a point. But as Newcastle move up the league and expectations build, the challenge gets tougher.

They are now a scalp; teams will go to St James’ Park to shut up shop and stop them playing. That will mean Newcastle have to improve and find a way past teams who try to stop them.

The other thing with the Premier League is that it all changes so quickly. Chelsea have extra quality and, even though they are not playing well, they can come back.

Arsenal will also push hard for fourth while Liverpool have put themselves back in the mix.

In among that competition, Toon will find it increasingly hard and it is a huge challenge for Pardew.

But it’s hard to see Newcastle making the top six in that company, although we should not deride the job that Pardew has done.

However, the former West Ham manager now faces an even harder job going forward. He has done so well that Mike Ashley will expect more miracles on a shoestring. Will Pardew get more money next season to carry on the brilliant job he has started?

Newcastle have been a breath of fresh air for the Premier League, but the challenge begins here.

We are into the business end of the season and they will have their work cut out to stay in the mix.

Pardew has proved himself and proved a point to really come back and dispel any doubts about his managerial ability.

After disappointments at Charlton and Southampton in a colourful managerial career, Newcastle have been the club where he has showed that he’s a top-class Premier League boss.

Pardew showed brilliant signs at West Ham but has gone from strength to strength at Newcastle – even if, eventually, they may fall just short this season.

Andy Carroll is looking a decent player again because he has games and match fitness under his belt.

It’s good to see Carroll coming back into form and now gives Liverpool a much-needed dilemma as Luis Suarez returns.
