Teasy
IMO he would have stayed had we stayed up, Shearer in charge permenantly and a large new contract would have kept him happy.
STM
If we really want to keep him that badly, then we keep him, what's the big deal? We up his wage to £20,000 with the promise of jacking it up to £40,000 should we get promoted. If he keeps complaining, give him a slap. The club holds the cards here and I don't really see what the fuss is about I agree with the sentiment that clubs should be tougher on players/contracts. Surely Shearer (when appointed) could sit down with him and say that the club expects him to honour his contract and be proffesional. If we fail to get promoted then we could agree to sell him after that.

Not saying we would have sold him am just saying he would have wnated to go, no way Al would have agree'd to selling him but the lure of joining Wenger at Arsenal would have turned his head. Its true but we have to trust that Ashley won't sell him and I do not trust that fat horrible cunt, Bassong is our player and I am sure any new owners and manager would want to keep him. All we can do is hope the club is sold before the player is.
Dinho lad
Juve weren't relegated because they were a s*** team. You're saying Bassong would have left had we finished 17th? I think he would still have wanted away had we stayed up aye, as soon as Arsenal and Spuds made their interest known he was always going to want to be away. Or maybe they would have thought "Oh, damn it.. Newcastle stayed up; not much chance of getting him now. Anyway, who's next on the list?!". Nice straw man btw You what?! Sometimes i think there are certain players who always just "want to leave", N'Zogbia, Martins and Bassong fall into that catagory. Why can't they just keep there mouth shut and just leave? When they do leave, a little thanks to the fans wouldn't go a miss too.

STM
When has Martins implied that he wants to leave? It's all been paper nonsense with him Although i do think the papers stir shit, i think there has been one too many "false stories" when it comes to Martins. Some people give him the benefit of the doubt but i'm inclined to believe that he has been guilty of "engineering" in the past. Either way, the type of player i'm talking about does exist. Guest firetotheworks
well people go on like we'll never sign a good player again man ffs. ...and would you let them go because you think someone else as good will come along again? Your argument doesn't make sense. I already said I think he's being disloyal and should play out his contract but just because he's gonna be leaving doesn't mean we won't find another good player. Whats wrong with that? Because we wont for a while. We already have the answer. The disloyal thing is a bit weird too, theres plenty of teams who have hung onto players who wanted to leave at one point. We need to be one of those teams. Ronaldo
How on earth do you know what the fans want? The Sun wants him out? He wants out? Just stop it man. Whilst other players are delcaring availability via the papers or distributing brochures at Ascot, he's made it clear himself and through his agent that he wants to stay. Has to count for something

Your argument doesn't make sense. I already said I think he's being disloyal and should play out his contract but just because he's gonna be leaving doesn't mean we won't find another good player. Whats wrong with that? Are you suggesting Duff, Smith, Geremi, Colo, Barton, Ameobi and any other waste of space should stay as well? Or is loyalty only applicable to players the fans like? Bassong is in a different position to them. None of them were youngsters plucked from obscurity and given a good run in the first team were they? They're already established players man. The fact is he's still young it's not like he should automatically play in the Premiership just because of one good season is it? Bottom line is we won't keep him whether we want to or not because Ashley the fat c*** will sell him but I just don't like how he's one of the first players to come out and say that he wants to join a Premiership side, like he's bigger than our club or something. Also, I don't recall ANY of the players you mentioned besides Colo I think saying they want to leave, they all want to stay and help the club. No...because they are shit. And if you think it will be easy to find another Bassong you obviously haven't seen many of our recent CB purchaes over the years. Mike
I haven't read the entire thread, but I was under the impression that Bassong was willing to stay, but wanted to leave because the club is an absolute fucking mess.

Carlito
I have no idea but I'm sure once all this takeover nonsense is sorted then we'd offer him one if he were to stay as there were mumblings about Shearer wanting to keep him should he be given the job. If he hasn't been offered a new contract, and with no manager at the club to reassure him of his future, why is it unreasonable for Bassong to be interested in a move to a premiership club? If the club want they can always insist he see out the last year of his contract but is that likely to happen? I doubt it. They will use the transfer fee to pay off the £10million in bonuses due to the other old codgers on our books. This is the reality of where we stand now, and it isn't Bassong's fault.
