Joey Barton (now retired)

Recommended Posts

Barton was very good last season but I think people are over-rating him a tad. I'd rather someone like N'Zogbia there next season who's more of a goal threat if we're planning on two widemen and Ben Arfa off a striker.

Agree with that.

I'm surprised at the amount of people saying that he is replaceable, one of your best players this season from what I've seen and everything goes through him, think he will be a lot harder for you to replace than people think.

Totally agree. Replacing him would see us having to change the way we play a lot as with him we effectively play 3 in the middle allowing Nolan to get forward freely. A traditional winger would curtail this a bit.

Highlights the point that Pardew still doesn't know how to use Nolan yet, and is why he probably ought to be sold as well sooner rather than later, believe it or not.

Same.

That said I really hope he stays, because I hate that it feels like we're having to take a step back before we even sign anybody.

Barton has been great this year.  However, at his age he'll regress before he ever improves.  It's also the only good, full year he's had during the contract.  It's obvious he's been pumping himself up as an England candidate so he can squeeze more money out of the contract.  I've no idea what the club offered but given the fact that the club did stand by him while he was in prison, no less, if the club offered him the same weekly terms and a decent signing bonus it would be fair for all if he accepted it.

If he wants more money, then yeah, maybe it is time to let him go.  Disappointing, but I wouldn't retain him if his demands are over the top.  I also understand that Fat Bastard might be undercutting him but if it was an insulting offer made in April, I think we would have heard something about it.

How many right midfielders are there that we could get who have Barton's vision, passing, crossing and can influence a game the way he can?

congratulations on having this tweeted word for word by United for Newcastle.

I don't want him to go by any means, but he's a half-winger, half-cm with an attitude problem who is attempting to milk a club who stood by him whilst he sat in a jail cell... forgive me if I think we can survive without that at the club. Personally, I'd prefer an out-an-out winger on both flanks, therefore Joey is replaceable in the team that I'd craft. Guess it depends what Pardy Parderson's vision for our starting XI is.

Well said and agree 100%.

Too many on here in total panic and thinking we are totally dependent on 1 player ffs.

The way Pardew sets us up and, going on his past and the players we're being linked with, where he's going to take us, Barton is becoming steadily more obsolete, though. I think it's a mistake and a shame as when Joey had a good game he played in a great system and I loved the games that came out of them, but there you go... As a player, he doesn't fit nearly so well nowadays.

Isn't Barton essential to Pardew's way of playing? It's presumably because of that that our only genuine wide player (Routledge) was let go.

Regarding Routledge, I think he was let go to save wages and because Pardew simply didn't rate him in the slightest.

As for Barton, he's only essential given the squad Pardew's been dealing with (we've got fuck all decent attackers, let's face it). In truth he's been used somewhat differently since the first half of the season, and less effectively in my view (part of the reason Simpson has suddenly 'become shit', remember how everyone was saying their partnership was starting to outshine the Latin Left?). More to the point, as Pardew starts making a real stamp on things, Barton's going to become less useful, partly as he's too slow. Could only see that being different if Pardew somehow manages to reconvert him to centre-midfield, but that involves booting Nolan out, of course.

That's how I see it as well. Barton has struggled when playing in the centre he gets caught on the ball a lot. Out wide he's done well, especially when Carroll was here but not so much since. I doubt we'd lose much if Larsson replaced him. Similar game and very good delivery to the strikers. Although we could really be ambitious and go for someone who is a bit quicker as well.

United for Newcastle have copied what you said and pasted it on Twitter on their account. Some people might think they thought of this by themselves.

Or, with one of are top players seemingly leaving already, people are worried that rather than using the Carroll money to improve, we'll be using it to replace those that leave.

At the end of the day, we can only speculate as we don't know the actual details of what Barton is demanding, and what the club are willing to offer him.

So we can't really lay any blame towards anybody until we actually know what's been going on.

I wouldn't be surprised if his agent is doing this to try and force the club's hand.

Although I do expect to see something in the press from Llambias the mysterious club insider in the next few days, saying Barton has made obscene demands.

Depends who replaces the 3 players though Ronny. Spurs sold Carrick, Keane and Berbatov in a year they were fine, Man U sold Ronaldo and lost Tevez, they were fine, Liverpool have sold 3 of their best 5 players in 18 months...jury's still out but they're getting there.

Aye, they had decent squads though. Unfortunately, ours is shite.

Still think there's a long way to go regarding this.

Although I would be disappointed if he left it wouldn't be the end of the world, as long as we don't replace him with the likes of Larsson.

Must say, it doesn't send the best message if we lose 3 out of our 5 best players in the space of 6 months.

Of those 5 only 2 are players that are really top drawer though. What matters is whether they are replaced with as good or better.

Interested to hear what Pardew says. Wouldn't believe a word that snake Mckay has to say given the noises that have come out of the club about keeping Joey I doubt we just upped and left the table without a reason. I like that we are not willing to be held for ransom by players demands, we certainly would have crumbled in the past.

Will certainly be a big punch in the ribs to see Joey go especially after how well he has played this season, his vision and passing is genuinely stunning on his day. The club certainly owe him nothing though.

I'd still prefer a proper pacey RW longterm anycase, would add some much needed balance to the team.

On that last point, I expect you're right but it's already started - journalists already tweeting 'a source' who says he's turning down a very lucrative deal... the implication being it's not enough for richie rich.
