Guthrie "weak in possession". He's one of our only players who can keep the ball FFS.

He's been pretty good for us this season, in spite of the fact he's been played out of position in almost every meaningful game.

If he was in WBA current side, we'd all be talking about what a good player he is.

If he was in the WBA side, he'd be in the centre of midfield and happy.

He doesn't have the engine or fitness to play on the wing, this is something he needs to address.

Given the options we currently have though he's by far our best midfielder in the centre, he can still make a yard for himself and pass a football more than five yards, something other more experienced heads fail to do time and time again in the middle.

I actually think he'd slow their game down, prevent their counter-attacking game with his lack of pace and general passing. Wouldn't get anywhere near their starting XI imo.

He didn't keep it yesterday, he was constantly harried out of possession even against ten men. Don't know which game you were watching...probably the same one as Johnny who thinks Pancrate coming on as sub was our biggest problem.

A season is decided over 46 games, not 1.

Players have poor games and poor spells. Earlier in the season he was our best midfielder, with the most assists.

He did have a bad game yesterday. What does that prove?

the point is it wasn't a one off.

What's with this 'he's no good because Liverpool let him go'? - we're not in a position to choose the quality of player we have in the team alongside the Liverpool side

You can see why Liverpool let him go. He's weak as piss and loses the ball far too easily. That's the point.

But how's that relevant at all? Liverpool let him go because he's not good enough for Liverpool, he is good enough for us.

He isn't good enough for us for the same reasons he was allowed to leave Liverpool. Like I said he's too weak and loses possession and hope. He can't even make a mark dropping down a division. All this bollocks about him being played out of position doesn't excuse him for losing 50/50's and not being able to hold the ball under the slightest pressure.

It does really when he has little option, what movement is he surrounded by so he can offload the ball?

I must have missed all his other poor performances, despite seeing all of our games and reading all the reviews. It's more likely that there is knee-jerking going on but i'm sure that will be denied.

Guthrie is a good young player, one that is being wasted time after time.

One point off the top of my head....Van Aanholt overlapped Guthrie in the second half and was in acres of space but Guthrie was too slow to spot the pass and got tackled while he dithered. That was particularly annoying as the young lad quite often went outside but the ball didn't reach him quickly enough (if at all).

Guthrie is easily the best midfielder we have available, and yet hes playing on the wings. Its been done to death but those saying that he tries to do too much or that he cant pass or that he has no creative mind need to think about what theyre saying. He has the highest amount of assists despite being out of position, and him trying to do too much might be because he actually wants us to score a goal at some point, but has Smith and Nolan alongside him who he knows will do nothing, and Carroll in front of him who is one dimensional.

I'd much rather have a player who will try something and lose it than one that never does anything other than the obvious. He's played centre mid once this season iirc, against Leicester at home, he and Enrique were our best players that day, and he even scored. Criticise him, he's not perfect and no ones saying he is, but he's monumentally better than the other options, and we'd be nowhere near where we are now without him.

Guthrie came into middle of park yesterday and received the ball what did he do? Get pushed off it. Every time he comes in he creates absolutely nothing at all, he is so slow and takes so much time to decide what to do and then loses it.

He had a couple of chances to shoot from edge of the box yesterday to

We need midfielders with pace not a midfield with Butt, Smith, Nolan and Guthrie in it as they are so slow and dont create anything.

I doubt we'll see Guthrie in the centre of midfield in the foreseeable future under Hughton, because then he has to drop Smith or Nolan. He won't drop Smith as he's captain and is our defensive midfielder, he won't drop Nolan because he's got a big influence in the dressing room and (used to) score goals.

Thing is though he wouldn't get into WBA midfield, you've got Mulumbu as the defensive midfielder so he'd be in competition for one of the attacking midfield spots and Brunt, Dorrans, Koren and Thomas are streets ahead of Guthrie.

I like him, think he has a lot of talent but he has absolutely no engine! I have mates who play Sunday league football still pissed who can run around more than Guthrie.

Do we not have any fitness coaches? Some of our players fitness levels are fucking shocking.

He'll leave the club this summer or next and become a solid premiership midfielder.

well he's already played for 3 teams in the PL and never looked like a solid midfielder for Liverpool, Bolton or us.  Didn't make it at a top side and hasn't stood out in 2 teams who struggled.

Which is why I said 'become'.

I'm not sure he has the drive or determination to become a solid Premiership level midfielder- He's not particularly quick either. But he could "become" one, I'm just not so sure, I mean he gets pretty defeatist.
