VIOLENCE flared when rampaging Sunderland soccer yobs travelled through Newcastle.

The thugs attacked police dogs, subjecting them to the worst assaults in the Northumbria force’s history.

As many as 40 trouble-makers ran amok in Newcastle Central Station as they travelled home from their team’s friendly match in Scotland.

In total, four dogs were left battered and bruised, while the police stepped up their hunt for the louts responsible.

Some Sunderland fans criticised police, saying officers were heavy handed.

But Newcastle Area Commander Chief Supt Graham Smith said it was only through luck none of the dogs were seriously injured.

“A section of around 40 fans set upon the officers and dogs, kicking and punching them, and causing injuries to the dogs,” he said.

“We will not tolerate an assault on any of our officers or our dogs, and this behaviour was totally unacceptable. The fans arrived at the station intent on violence and our dogs have never faced that level of assault before.

“Thankfully, although shocked, battered and bruised none of them have been seriously injured and all are now at home recovering. It’s only through luck that none of them were seriously injured.”

Police were prepared for possible trouble on Saturday as Sunderland fans travelled from the North East to play Hearts in Edinburgh.

An operation was launched to make sure the travelling supporters were ushered safely from Newcastle Central Station and on to a Metro to keep them out of the city centre.

But gang of 40 arrived at the station, at around 8pm, intent on causing violence following their team’s draw.

Four police dogs, called, Clio, Floyd, Earl and Diesel were left injured after they were kicked and stamped on while on the floor.

Chief Supt Smith continued: “An investigation is under way to trace these people and have them brought to task for their actions.

“There is no room for people such as this amongst the law-abiding football fans who go week in and week out to support their team. Therefore we’ll also be progressing football banning orders against these violent individuals to ensure they don’t spoil future games for the true supporters.

“We are well aware that the majority of football fans do not behave in this way. Law-abiding fans can rest assured we’re doing all we can to track down these particular individuals as soon as possible.”

Three Sunderland fans received hospital treatment following the disturbance. One person was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

British Transport Police are assisting with the investigation and the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as a matter of routine.

The Football Supporters’ Federation, which represents fan’s is also investigating the incident.

Anyone with information about the disorder is asked to contact police urgently on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Mackems on On The Buses reckon the coppers gave them a right pasting. One of them who got battered quite literally senseless was a known hooligan. Yet he did nowt wrong (except allow plod vengeance, in a what goes around fashion..)

Coppers very likely had it as priority to not let a repeat of last time they caused mayhem around the bars local to Central Station. Struck out, quite literally, to stop even worse disorder. They also caused serious bother on the trains eading South from Edinburgh post match.

Once again the violence will be defended/condoned by their chairman and club. Isn't he the only club official ever to pay for for hooligans to fly home ?

Their club virtually encourage and certainly turn a blind eye to violent pitch invasions whenever they have a big game.

They really should address the problem.

Typical Mackems. Always the victims never the perpetrators. It's never their fault is it. Grant Leadbitter gets caught speeding, its not his fault Newcastle fans were chasing him. The Derby day troubles at the Stadium of Shite last time Who's fault was it? Oh yeah The Police's it was them who invaded the pitch wasnt it. What about that Hooligan Kevin Ball came out and defended, oh yeah not his fault he's got the reputyation as a known thug its all the polices.

Whenever the fuckers are in any sort of bother they blame it on some other beligerent.
