Hamburg sack their manager days before they play Fulham.  I hope Fulham can take advantage.........

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8644181.stm

I said Hamburg have no chance vs. Fulham over the two legs. Now after sacking Labadia I think they have a chance again. They have the biggest motivation ever - the final in their own stadium.

With a new (caretaker) manager/head coach I honestly expect Hamburg to go through. Probably with a 1-1.

i dont think theres a football fan around that isnt hoping fulham win the europa league (liverpool apart), would be fantastic if they did

Would rather have Atlético win it... but would smile if Fulham pulled it off, mind.

Do you speak football?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2006/mar/08/theknowledge.sport

SPANISH:

Armario ("wardrobe") - a burly central defender.

Chalaca - the term used in Peru and elsewhere in South America (though not Chile, as becomes clear below) for an overhead kick. Chalaca is the name given to anyone from Callao, a seaport a few miles from central Lima. During the 50s, the club Sport Boys of Callo employed a string of strikers who were experts at scoring from overhead kicks (thanks to Kevin Thompson).

Chilena - what Chileans calls the overhead kick.

Cola de vaca ("cow's tail") - to stop the ball and change direction.

Chumpigol - a shot from a free-kick that goes through the wall and into the net (especially South American).

Gambeteando ("shrimping") - the term used for long, swerving Maradona-style dribbles.

Gol Ol?ico - A goal scored directly from a corner.

Hacer la cama ("making the bed") - When a player with a defender behind him doesn't jump for a high ball in order to create the impression that the defender has held him down.

Hacer un sombrero ('to make a hat') - dinking the ball over an opponent's head and running around to retrieve it.

Palomita ("little dove") - diving header

Pepinazo ("big cucumber") - powerful long-range shot.

Rabona ("cow's whip") - kicking the ball from behind the other leg (Argentina).

Ca??nel - the nutmeg.

La vaselina - a chip over the goalkeeper's head.

Veronica - a term sometimes used in Spain to describe the Zidane turn/double drag-back (according to Luca Barratti, it's from bull-fighting where some particularly daredevil matadors perform a similar move).

Nice article. We also say "Chilena" and "Rabona" in Spain even though they say they are south-american words. We also use "Tijera" (scissor) for the overhead kick.

A "palomita" for us is a diving save from a keeper, not a header.

We call the nutmeg "túnel", "caño" or "Sotana" (when done to a keeper). "Sotana" is the long dress that chaplains wear, intending that if the keeper had worn one, he would have stopped the ball.

Some other words...

Chupapostes or Palomero ("postsucker"/"dove keeper"): goalhanger

Chupón ("sucker") : ballhog

Bicicleta ("bicycle"): stepover.

Tuercebotas ("boot tearer") : terrible player, normally dirty to make up for his lack of skill (hence the word)

Cantar ("to sing"): when a keeper makes a big mistake.

Ariete ("battering ram"): our word for striker.

Amarrategui: playing 10 behind ball (false basque word, as basque teams were famously defensive and hard as nails in the 1980s)

Pared ("wall"): one-two, alluding to the fact that the ball will "rebound" from the second player back to the first one, as if it was a wall.

Gato ("cat"): common nickname given to agile keepers, particularly in SA.

Crack: footballing ace (taken from the English "cracking player", but we use it as a sustantive "Messi's a crack")

Peinar ("comb" the ball): flick-on

Salir a por uvas ("going to get grapes"): when a keeper fails to defend a cross, speaking as if he went to get something else instead of the ball

Piedra ("stone"): overhit pass

No la mete ni al arco iris ("couldn't score against a rainbow"): our "can't hit a barn door".

Manchester City stars fined for 'too dark' window tints

Five Manchester City stars have been fined by police who spotted their vehicles' tinted windows were too dark as they arrived at training.

Shay Given, Kolo Toure, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Patrick Vieira and Stephen Ireland were all given £30 fixed penalty notices on Wednesday.

They were caught out by police and the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) at the Carrington complex car park.

Each player was told to wind down the offending window until it was fixed.

But it is believed club officials arranged for a company to come and correct the tints during training.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the fines were handed out on Wednesday morning.

"An officer from GMP's Road Policing Unit, working with representatives from VOSA, stopped a number of cars on Carrington Lane, Trafford," a spokesman said.

"The cars were stopped and found to have illegally tinted windows.

"The drivers were issued with fixed penalty notices and prohibition notices."

A variety of companies can tint windows of vehicles to add privacy for the owner.

By law, front driver and passenger windows must allow 70% of light through and the windscreen 75%.
